Y so shallow?

I'm really not a fan of whoever designs the pools for the YMCAs around here. The two I've been to only go to five feet deep, and in the one I checked out yesterday, the "deep" side is in a lane. I spent the whole hour in three feet of water. Mostly kicking while holding onto a wall, occasionally paddling across to do it on the opposite end of the pool.

I have six to choose from, the furthest being half an hour away. Probably will never go to that one unless I happen to be in a nearby AirBnB or something.

In a year or so, the new Everett branch will have a much nicer pool than any of them, but hopefully it'll be deep enough to actually tread water in it.

Meanwhile, I've started rolling my feet on frozen water bottles per my podiatrist. He wants me to do it three times a day, fifteen minutes at a time. It's surprisingly difficult since I need to lay a blanket or towel down on hard floors, and that ends up bunching up a lot. It's obviously effective, my feet feel like they've been majorly worked over.

I'll miss tonight's roll, though. We're leaving soon to see Kathy Griffin in Seattle and staying the night down there. I haven't been to Seattle since we bought tile for the bathroom renovation. October, maybe? It's been a while. I don't particularly miss it, but tonight should be fun.

Table Days

I've spent too much time on tables this week. Wildly different experiences were had on each.

On Tuesday I went to the Korean spa and bought the luxurious scrub and massage package. Completely wonderful. There's always a little anxiety when turning over on a slippery, wet table, but I'm sure he'd catch me if I started to slide off.

Wednesday was my physical therapy evaluation. We learned my calves need loosening and my arches and butt need strengthening.

Yesterday was my second session for the '80s neon fantasy on my back. I hoped to fill in the center part, too, but it was a very painful session and I was ready to stop when the keytars were done.

Tattoo update

We also planned out the size and placement of some other elements and chose what to do next time I'm there.

Since swimming is bad for fresh tattoos, today's my first weekday in a while without a visit to the pool. I took my first walk since the injury instead! Just a few miles down at Edgewater. I chose it because it's a loop route so you can do as much or as little as you like without worrying about walking too far from the car before realizing it's time to turn back.

I've been on my own most of the week with Garrett in Mexico on a business trip. He gets back late tonight, which means no hangout time before going back to work. A bummer, for sure. I decided on Friday I'd make the most of my weekend and my MoviePass and see three movies in three days.

On Friday I saw Solo, and decided when it got out to take the extra cash I had from my tattoo appointment over to the casino. The plan was to spend no more than $40 on the slot machines, and when I was down to my last $6 or so of that, I suddenly was watching while the machine played through a bunch of free games and went all the way up to $126! I decided that was the right time to cash out and hit the buffet. After that and the two cocktails I had while there, I was still $40 or so ahead.

Yesterday I went back up to Marysville for an early showing of Tag, then went to a gastropub I've been wanting to check out. I had a big salad and two pieces of a really great carne asada pizza, which left four more pieces to bring home. The guy next to me at the bar told me about an arcade nearby, so I played video games and pinball a little while before heading home. One of those was Joust, one of my all-time favorites.

Lisa came over for an awesome dinner from my favorite Thai place in Everett, which I ordered on GrubHub for her to pick up on her way. We watched the RuPaul's Drag Race reunion episode and then The 'Burbs, which she'd never seen.

Today's movie was Hereditary, which was scary and great. I thought about going back to the gastropub because a guy bought a round of drinks for everyone yesterday, and since I was already settling up they printed me a slip to exchange for a free drink in the future. I decided to save it and come back, and remembered there's a new Philly cheese steak place in the neighborhood. I got a sandwich and fries to bring home, and wrote a post about it for Live in Everett.

When I get paid for the blog post, and all is said and done, I'll just about break even for everything I did this weekend. Not bad!

Other than all that, I've spent most of my time this weekend watching Bates Motel, which I just started a few days ago. It's so good! I can't believe it's not really popular.

Yesterday was a nice day off even though I was flying solo for most of it. I started with a short walk down at Edgewater Beach. 1.8 miles, one of my shortest ever. My physical therapist said I should try walking more often, but keep it short for now and stretch before, during, and after. Stopping to stretch in the middle was certainly weird. Another weird thing was that the gates at the beach were open, even though I didn't think they'd be. My theory is that people came there late Tuesday night to light firecrackers, because I saw a lot of those laying around. The gates don't lock, so anyone can open them. The port worker who showed up to open them happened to arrive right as I was at my car for the middle stretches and asked if I opened them. I bet he didn't believe me when when I said I didn't.

I wanted to see Incredibles 2 but wasn't in the mood for a theater full of kids, so I finally went to Cinebarre, an adults-only theater with food and alcohol down in Mountlake Terrace. My lunch there was a bison burger, which was decent. I'll definitely go back once in a while, but I really wish Everett had a similar theater.

It's pretty far South, so I decided to go to Central Market in Mill Creek on the way back. It's the kind of store where everything's delicious but also expensive, so I'm glad it's far enough away that I never go more than a couple of times a year.

This came just after my last personal post. Nice addition to the collection, but it'll be a challenge to keep it safe from cat claws. It'll either have to be on a ceiling, or horizontal high up on a wall.

I hadn't thought much about the previous attempts before getting that photo, but then they happened to all line up in a 3x3 grid in my phone's gallery.

I was on my own again yesterday so before heading out to Ryan and Julie's wedding reception, I checked out the pool at the Marysville YMCA. It's funny how all the newer YMCAs look exactly the same and their pools are all ridiculous in their own way. Marysville's is mostly three feet deep, four feet at the center. I can't imagine any reason for that other than efficient draining. Incidentally, I was at the Monroe one this morning and it was either three feet deep all the way across, or maybe a little deeper like Mukilteo, but if so, it was a mirror image of it.

While I was in Marysville, the Brinno was at a North Everett business park.

Before checking into my Airbnb in Carnation, I visited the Snoqualmie Casino for slots and lunch. I could have walked away from the slot machines $40 richer, but I pressed my luck and broke even. That meant my cocktail, lunch, and valet tip came out of my pocket.

Here's the cottage where I stayed. It was lovely and had very well-stocked pantry and some stuff in the refrigerator, too! It turns out it's around the corner from where Julie grew up and she and the owner know each other very well.

Extra chairs at the reception made accidental art.

I almost never take pictures when people are around any more, it's become a very solitary activity for me. I should have thought to take a least a couple of the happy couple, though. Oops! The only one I took at the reception was this one of me and Julie's friend Theresa, who I hadn't seen in over ten years! She said, "Get a picture!" so I did.

The Brinno was hard at work back at the cottage while I was at the reception.

The aforementioned pantry at the cottage and the lovely breakfast I made there this morning.

Breakfast at the cottage

That's fresh tomato with sauteed zucchini and onions with a couple of fried eggs, plus cinnamon raisin toast. Both slices have butter and one slice got some of this, which was amazing.

Garrett's still not back from the fly-in, so I took the opportunity to make myself a lunch he likely wouldn't want. This is vermicelli with chicken, peas, and cilantro chili Bitchin' Sauce. That's the part Garrett wouldn't like as he has the genetic makeup that makes cilantro taste like soap. Those poor people. Anyway that's all topped with pecorino romano and there's broccoli on the side. I've found broccoli tastes pretty great if you sprinkle salt and pepper, microwave it for two minutes, and give it a squeeze of lemon juice. Quick and tasty.

Hello marina

My physical therapist encouraged me to try more walks when I said I hadn't since the last one I told her about, so I decided I'd go to the marina this morning. The trip there may also be slightly related to my annoyance at not getting to swim yesterday at the Y. Nobody mentioned anything on the way in, but after I showered got my swimsuit on, I found the door to the pool locked. Guess the lifeguard was running late? I relaxed in the steam room and checked occasionally before giving up 40 minutes into his shift.

Funnily enough, the front desk dude had two chances to let me know about the situation, because the sunrise distracted me and I forgot my lock. On my second trip in, he even said, "How am I supposed to get out to see this sunrise if people keep coming in?"

I'll never ever go to this because I don't stay up late enough, but I took a photo so I could share it with the #liveineverett tag on Instagram this morning. In case you didn't surmise from the small text, these are free movies on the waterfront people can watch from the lawn or from their own boats!

I only walked half the marina since I have to take it easy, but it was lovely today.

My physical therapist wants me to walk as much as every other day now, increasing distance over time. My last walk was 3.2 miles and I did 4 this morning! I chose Edgewater Beach because it's easy to do as little or as much as you want to there. And since I didn't do the Mukilteo side first, I parked across from the road leading to the beach. That was nice because it was shady, and since it was close, I didn't have to plan for the long walk to the car at the end.

The herons down there were very brave or maybe just tired. I've never walked so close to them so many times in a day.

Last summer when I went with Lisa to Jetty Island, I was surprised to learn that Garrett had never been! He's from here! So a couple of months ago, I decided that's what I wanted to do for my birthday this year. If you don't have your own boat, the free public one is only available from July 5th through Labor Day, so my birthday's right at the start of the season.

I also wanted dinner at Lombardi's, which is nearby, so I reserved passage out at 6:30 with a return trip at 9:00, the final sailing. Part of why I chose that time to come back was to see as much of the sunset from there as possible, and also to try to glimpse a cheesy water lantern launching event taking place at the next park over from the ferry dock. We were too early to see the actual launch, but we could hear the silly "inspiring" music and recorded speech snippets. That event was surprisingly crowded as far as we could tell from the boat.

My brother called on Thursday to ask what was up for my birthday. He and my sister-in-law ended up joining us for dinner so they could get out of their neighborhood, lest they be trapped in it once it was barricaded off for a huge neighborhood picnic. They hate all their neighbors and wanted nothing to do with it.

I hoped they'd try to get standby tickets for the boat and join us on the island (reservations have to be made two days in advance) but since it wasn't a sure thing, they decided to just join us for dinner. I'm glad we went as a group, that way we were able to split two appetizers and two desserts, and everyone got their own entree.

2.5 hours at the island sounded like a lot at the time I booked it, but it was nice and seemed even a little short when it came to an end. One family nearby was really quite annoying, but rather than let them ruin my time there, I just let them be a reminder that I've got a pretty great family and life.

I was pretty nervous all day because I made plans to meet Garret and Tyler from Live in Everett for this challenge.

Shortly after we chose when to meet there, I looked at the post on Facebook again and saw in the comment thread that they were using a sauce with a million Scoville units! And here I was on my way to eat it. On camera.

20180718_155449

It wasn't nearly as bad as I worried it'd be, though. Yes, my nose ran and my eyes watered, but I wasn't in a huge amount of pain or anything. There were a few times when I took a breath and almost coughed a lot, but it was never out of control. Of course I'll share the video when it's posted.
