Wild week

The blog post about Banh Meetup 2 finally published so I printed it out to take to the winners along with their trophy. I just wanted something for them to read in case they hadn't already heard about it. They had, though, and they were stoked.

20190510_131114_HDR

I had two trophies made this year, one for them and one for Bluewater who provided the cocktails. Theirs was for MVP.

Funnily enough, I had lunch at a different Vietnamese restaurant for lunch.

Had to do a little work on the car and that always means lunch at White Lotus. Normally I get the banh hoi, my favorite dish, but I knew ahead of time that we'd have a big dinner, early, so I just ordered the small seafood pho with less noodles.

20190510_123527_HDR

The server at White Lotus knows that I always want banh hoi and was shocked when I said I'd have something else, but I told her we'd be eating Olive Garden takeout for dinner and she understood immediately.

Yesterday was a nice cap to a very long week. Someone let my credentials at work lapse which kept me off the corporate network for almost a week. The support alias I monitor was looked after in my absence but the very first email I got from it when I gained access again was someone following up on something that was missed.

Thursday was quite the day because I had to run training sessions at 6am, 10am, and 6:30pm. That's one of the big drawbacks of working at a global company and supporting tools everyone uses. I was pretty exhausted by the last call and didn't do nearly as well on that one, and my throat's still a little raw two days later from all the talking.

IMG_20190506_133901_272

I still managed to get out for a few nice walks. On Tuesday I wanted to see if the winter weekday closure period at Pigeon Creek Beach was done. At first I thought it was still going because the gate was locked when I got there, but the guard yelled for me as I was walking away; he just hadn't opened it for the day yet. He said the gate at the other end of the path to the beach itself would still be locked, but I did the path anyway for the distance. It's a neat walk along the port. The pictures are hard to get through the chain link fence, but I got a few.

I said previously that I was unlikely to go to Edgewater Beach much now that the path from there to Mukilteo Beach is closed for ferry terminal construction, but I was in the mood for it the next day. The loop trail there is now almost exactly half a mile, which is kinda cool for getting in the exact amount of miles you want. Strangely I don't want to go as far when it's repetitive and only did three miles.

I really love that day's time lapse, especially the boat leaving at the end.

Garrett's birthday was Tuesday and unfortunately I was in Redmond for meetings as well as a meet and greet with coworkers, so I didn't get home until 7:00. Knowing I'd be pretty late, I had a big steak cooking sous vide all day as well as potatoes baking in the crock pot. I picked up the present I commissioned for him on my way out of town and framed it in the garage when I got home.

IMG_20190508_183217_117

Another lovely piece by Elizabeth Person, this time of Jex, Garrett's beloved Rav4 that he drove for 21 years. I'm glad I commissioned it when I did, as Jex was gone when I got home. Garrett got himself a new car for his birthday!

I water the vertical garden on Thursdays and got some photos this week. It'd been a while and there are some new plants.

Yesterday I had a fairly typical walk at the marina. The sky was super clear so I didn't bother setting up a time lapse. This is one of the more impressive pieces of graffiti I've seen in a long time.

IMG_20190510_053021_266

I'm working on a piece for Live in Everett about the various boat launches around town, so I got photos of that one.

Looks like there's some party or something happening where people dress their boats up.

Rotary Park at the end of the Lowell Riverfront Trail has another boat launch so I stopped by on the way home.

20190510_065234_HDR

The third boat launch is at Langus, where I go every week. Shockingly, out of the nearly 2,300 photos I've taken there, none are of the boat launch. So I'll probably end up there tomorrow even though I said I wasn't going to.

In the scramble when my account at work was locked my boss invited me via an alternate email address to tons of meetings this week and last. A bunch this week were canceled on my original account and I hadn't really given it a lot of thought until I looked at the calendar this morning and saw this week was almost completely empty. That didn't seem right, so I went to the alternate account and--whoops--found a whole week of meetings that I needed to forward to my main account. I think I missed one meeting today, and I got into the next one ten minutes late.

Not really a big deal, these are planning meetings with various stakeholders and I'm really just there so I have a little context later on when the time comes for me to test each item out.

We had a meeting this afternoon, but the attendees noted that they weren't really the right people to be on the call, so we wrapped it up. I decided to use the time to finally watch the final episode of Travelers, which was really great. I'm bummed that it's canceled but glad it got a nice finale. Now that I'm finished with that and caught up on The OA, it's back to The Magicians.

Had a good walk at the marina this morning. I was about to set up a time lapse facing West looking out into the sound, but there were more boats at the doc than I expected, and I noticed the sky to the East looked really neat. So I walked out onto the dock and set it up facing East. No clue why I'd never tried this spot before, it's really great.

I mean come on. You can bet I'll set up here again.

Every year there are a few really hot days in May before it gets cold again until around July 4th. Garrett calls it the "sucker punch" because someone everyone forgets that it happens every single year and they get so excited because they think summer's here. We just laugh when it gets cold again. I was quite cold for a good portion of the walk this morning, though if I'd worn gloves or another layer, it'd have been too much.

We'll see if all the flowers make it.

20190513_063810

I never really noticed how cute the sign on the Jetty Island info booth is.

20190513_055750

Yesterday was a nice walk at Langus even though I wasn't planning to go there. I just turned in a blog post about the various boat launches around town and was surprised I didn't have a good photo of the one at Langus in my huge album. Seriously, in almost 2,300 photos, I didn't have one? Super weird.

20190512_070348

There was a heron on the Spencer Island bridge, which is weird. You almost never see them that high up or on that kind of structure. It took off before I could get close enough for a photo, but it flew by a tree that had another in it, so I got a photo of that one.

20190512_055450

Decent time lapse there, but not as cool as today's.

I just had the thought that work might be pretty interesting in a couple of weeks. They found some funding for additional development work, but had to spend it in the current fiscal year. That ends June 30, so between now and then, there are suddenly all these extra people on the dev team. Funnily enough, recordings of some of my training sessions with the field last week are being used to bring them up to speed.

The challenging part will be testing all the stuff they do. I'm the only one who does validation and documentation and there's about to be a lot more of that coming all at once.

I guess it's always better to be in demand that not needed.

Exploring again

On Thursday I climbed up the East side of the gulch for the first time in ages. It was nice to climb again as I've been spending most of my time in flat spots and it's good to keep the strength up. I need to do it at least once a week, I think. It was unusually foggy that day.

20190516_054051

This weekend was the Fisherman's Village Music Festival, Everett's multi-day, multi-stage music event. I'm not really big on live music so I'm glad my friend Kristen who runs the Everett Makers Market worked with the festival to set up its first Night Market. 40ish art vendors plus food trucks, and that part was free! There was even a music stage set up in the market tent, so that gave people one opportunity to see live music without having to buy a ticket. We went with Kyle and Lisa and had a great time, and even walked over to the gorgeous bar at a new-ish hotel for a drink there. Kyle stayed late so we could catch up, and thankfully I was able to sleep the right amount instead of waking up at the normal time.

Yesterday was pretty dull as I was on call for a migration for work. My job was to test our tool after the migration, so, the last part. And the migration took much longer than they thought it would, so most of my day was spent waiting around.

Back to the Gulch today. I was originally going to do a big loop by exiting via the residential neighborhood in the Northeast corner, but I did a lot of exploring instead, and doing that loop would have added two miles or so to my six total. I was tired by the end and glad I did six instead of eight.

Welcome back, flickr

It's a bummer when you have the time and energy to blog but can't due to one site or another being down. It's strange to think how common it used to be for LiveJournal to randomly be down for hours and how impactful that would be because it was the only site a lot of us were hanging around on because there was no Twitter, tumblr, or Facebook yet. The web mostly has its shit together now so it was super weird the last couple of days to not be able to upload to flickr as they were doing maintenance. It definitely went on longer than expected and for some reason, the Android app took a long time to come back on after the site came up. This morning I was just about ready to grab a cable and hook it up to my phone to get my latest pictures online. In fact, I was about to, but the cable I needed wasn't on my side table and I checked one last time before getting up to find it, and it worked.

I just typed out a couple of paragraphs about this week's work misadventures but then decided that was boring and deleted it. I'll just summarize by saying I'm pretty good at my job and accomplished a lot, and am glad the holiday weekend is here.

Work aside, it was quite the week. On Tuesday I met up with a real estate agent who agreed to show me around Hat Island, a private island east of Everett. There are about 260 homes there, most of which are used as weekend and summer homes, and only about 50 are lived in year-round. I'll link to my blog post when it publishes, but it was neat to get an idea of what life is like on an island with almost nothing on it. They have a 9-hole golf course, a yacht club, beaches, and a fire station that doubles as a gas station one hour a week. You can have a car there, but it doesn't need to be registered or insured. And you can get by without a car because they have a shuttle to and from the ferry. But that only runs twice on Thursdays and once a day Friday-Sunday. I think I'd definitely want my own boat if I had a place there.

20190521_134358_HDR

Unfortunately, the boat ride out was really rough, and I got seasick. Of course my guide and her son told me how to best avoid seasickness after the fact, but I was sick for 24 hours. That's a bummer because my friend Elizabeth gave a talk that evening that I missed at the library about collaborating with the author of the children's book they just published. I'm very interested in this because I have one I should work on more. The concept is there, and I have a nice gimmick, and have even written the first couple of pages. Plus I've already found the artist I want to work with on it.

It occurs to me that I should set aside structured time each week. I could be writing it right now, haha.

I ordered Elizabeth's book and it arrived yesterday. Looking forward to reading it.

It was back to our own marina for my next walk. I still wasn't feeling great, so I only did a few miles.

20190522_052347

20190522_052529

Had some more fun with the IG layout feature while I was there. I think I've already said that I would love to have digital wallpaper, it'd be so much fun to easily decorate with my own pictures.

Panoramas are always a little wonky, but sometimes necessary.

IMG_20190522_054159_703

One thing I don't like about Brinno cameras is they aren't very good at indicating low battery life. When I set this up, it looked as though I had half the battery life left, which would be enough for several lapses. It died during this one. Not sure how impactful that was, as I only walked three miles or so.

One of my favorite Instragram accounts is Sweet Walls of Everett and I had to turn around and drive back to this wall to take a photo and tag them.

IMG_20190523_045153_286

That was on the way to Lowell Riverfront Trail. Thankfully even though the bushes were cleared where I like to set up my time lapses there, I'm still able to hide the camera pretty well. No video from that day, though, as it was boring. The walk was nice, though.

20190523_051955

That area will change a lot over the next few years. I've previously shared photos tracking the progress of the new housing development on the former site of the Great Everett Tire Fire, as well as the townhouses at the north end of the area. There's a large flat area between them and IKEA originally showed interest in opening a store there, which would have been really cool. I think we'll be better off with what we get instead, though. There will eventually be a 1,200-unit apartment complex that includes shopping and entertainment. A movie theater is supposed to be included and I really hope it'll be a specialty one like Alamo Drafthouse. Even if it's just a regular movie chain, the location will be very convenient for me, just down the hill from our neighborhood.

Currently when I want to go to the movies, I can either go four miles to our local mall but get stuck in traffic on the way back, or eight miles to the one in Marysville. I prefer that because I'm going opposite the flow of traffic on the way back.

It'll be years before the new complex arrives, though.

No big weekend plans other than to see the inlaws tomorrow.

Cut off, wrong turn

It's been sunny and warm lately and that kind of weather sends me running to the woods. Trees are so good at keeping the temperature down. On Sunday, I decided to confirm what I suspected last time I was at Japanese Gulch, which was that the northernmost trails on the west side were closed up intentionally. Previously, I found a bunch of huge cut branches blocking the path from the top, but I wasn't absolutely sure I was where I thought I was. So Sunday I went up the other way and found, indeed, that it was the trail I thought it was. I should have suspected as much, since the trail leading up from the other side was very overgrown. It's kind of rude of them to block one side of a trail but not the other.

There's still a way to come back down via the nearby neighborhood once you make your way over to the street up above via one of the trails further South. I explored a couple of streets I've never seen before, the kind I love that are a mix of huge mansions and rotting small homes waiting to be fixed up.

On Sunday we went for an early Memorial Day meal at Garrett's parents. It was nice, though I need to remember to ask for the air conditioning to be turned on before it gets too warm. Food was great. We didn't see much of Bella.

20190526_144333_HDR

It'd been a long time since I went to Lord Hill Regional Park, so I figured Memorial Day would be a good time to. I noticed on its website that there's a south entrance I hadn't been to and decided to check it out. Unfortunately, I accidentally turned onto a highway I wasn't supposed to, and it took forever to make my way back. It worked out in a way, though, as I arrived right when the park officially opens. This time of year I'm not overly concerned with entering early when it's already so bright out, but it worked out that I didn't need to.

Here are some nice shots from that hike. I think I'll save my writing energy about it for LiEv.

Had a pretty short session at the shop yesterday because Jimmy hurt his shoulder at the gym. He was uncomfortable enough that he couldn't work on my back at all, so we added one tattoo to each foot. Here's the source material and what we ended up with.

One thing I love about Instagram is that people are pretty into it and responsive. I tagged Starheadboy in the photos and posted the first one before we got started, so he knew I was being tattooed with his work again while it was happening. Fun!

Since I added two yesterday, this morning I figured I may as well take inventory:

1) Peacock/Moonbeam City/Pagoda/Tree sleeve
2) Seahorse skeleton made of horse bones
3) The More You Know
4) T-Rex (Dinosaur Comics)
5) Freckle ("Sometimes things that are expensive are worse")
6) Flaming skull
7) Abbath kewpie
8-11) clear retro beverages: Zima, Orbitz, Clearly Canadian, Crystal Pepsi
12-14) Starheadboy: Focus Group astronaut kid, burrito unicorn, cat in a box
15) '80s fantasy back piece

Upcoming:
- More work on the back
- Solo Jazz cup (with bendy straw)
- Garfield phone
- TRON leg sleeve
- Great blue heron sleeve

Considering:
- Lursa and B'Etor
- ROOM 2704 knuckle tattoos

Live with LiEv

Live in Everett had their first podcast recording event this week at Bluewater Distilling. Of course I was excited to go and wore this appropriate old favorite t-shirt.

20190530_175235

I parked over at the marina parking since I knew I'd probably want to walk around a bit after and was delighted to see this new addition to the sign at Fisherman's Market and Grill. They have really good ice cream there, more people should know about it.

20190530_175329_HDR

I decided ahead of time that I wanted to treat myself to a steak and some nice drinks. They were only serving from the lounge menu in the room the event was in, so I asked nicely if I could get one. They agreed when I said I wanted it rare. It was so damn good.

20190530_184044

The podcast recording was super fun and I met some cool people. I'll share it when it publishes next week.

20190530_190646

Samantha from Bluewater arrived as it was wrapping up and I ended up talking to her and a few other people until after 9:00! Also saw my first sunset in a very long time. It was definitely weird being at a place I normally do sunrises at when the opposite happened.

20190530_211310

Everybody's very excited because LiEv is bringing back their food truck festival. They did it once and decided not to do it again the next year, but now it's back. I wasn't necessarily planning to go, but now I am, because they added the Yum Run, a novelty 5k with small bites at each mile that ends with early entrance to the food truck festival. I'll bring up the rear with the other walking people as I have no interest in running. They'll provide hats shaped like giant food, it should be weird and fun.

I'm also excited to report that the Live in Everett Patreon finally broke the 100-patron mark! There are 102 as of now. I really wish it was more like 1,000. They have over 10,000 followers on Facebook so that's not unreasonable, and they put out tons of free content every week. There's really no other resource around here that comes remotely close to what we provide and it'd be great to see more people support us. But 100 is a nice milestone!

EDIT:
Coincidentally, I just got my monthly Patreon bill and I thought I'd share the total. Putting my money where my mouth is, so to speak. My current monthly bill is $48:

Live in Everett: $30/month
Mellzah: $10/month
Linoleum Knife and Tatiana Gill: $2/month each
Dumb Gay Politics: $1 per patron-only podcast, generally once a week.

I recently dropped Hey Qween because they're just not making good podcasts lately. Ironically Jonny called Teddy the producer on the episode that made me decide to drop them, and you couldn't hear Teddy at all. I just think if you're going Patreon-only and not even offering a free podcast any more, the ones people pay for should sound good.

SchadenFriday and Caturday are ending this week

Recently I noticed almost all of the images in Caturday were coming from the same source, which meant the others had mostly dried up and it was time to find some new ones. When I went to search for some new ones, I realized I didn't really want to. And increasingly, I won't do things I don't want to if I don't have to. Like at work.

SchadenFriday's a different story. Almost all the gifs in it came via email from a friend*. Those ebb and flow and some weeks when the file was empty, I'd go look for a few, but I never really cared for anything more than a passive process in RSS.

They've both been a lot of fun, but I'm stopping now before they're completely unfun. Not sure if there'll be a SchadenFriday at all this week as the file's empty now.

When I backed out of the garage yesterday, it was sprinkling a little bit. I wasn't worried, but that was naive considering Thursday's weather, which included marble-sized hail! By the time I got a few blocks, it was raining a lot. If my new foot tattoos weren't still scabby, I'd have turned around, changed out of my walking gear, and gone swimming. I got completely soaked and very cold, and only did a couple of miles.

There's a lot to do at work lately but also a lot of waiting. It's the nature of the beast. I was excited while I waited to day to see that my new post on Live in Everett about Hat Island published.

Thursday I got one of the coolest time lapses I've done by putting the camera on the boat launch at Lowell. It's a more visible spot than I'd normally use, so I walked back and forth on the trail nearby so I could keep an eye on it. That made for a pretty boring walk, and I ended up having to put up with the burned rubber stench from some asshole doing donuts in the parking lot, but it was all worth it in the end.

When I was on the LiEv podcast, one of the questions an Instagram friend had for me was, "Where is your happy place?" My answer was all the places in Everett by the water. We really lucked out to be able to have a nice house at a good price in a decent-sized city that's so beautiful and has so much water everywhere. When I was growing up in New Mexico, I never thought I'd live somewhere quite like this. It just seemed unattainable because other coastal cities are huge and it costs a lot to be near the water.

Clearly I love it so much here that I consider myself an ambassador. That Hat Island post is my 49th on the Live in Everett blog, and I have three more with the Chew Crew.

The LiEv podcast we recorded at Bluewater last week came out this week. I'm glad they realized it'd be better if they involved the audience, and it was cool to hear everyone's favorite Everett memories.

I forgot to say the last part of mine, which would have tied it all up nicely. So if you listen, the part I meant to add is that our first Makers Market visit was at the space which is now Toggle's Bottle Shop, and the LiEv office is upstairs. I went back up later to add that and hoped Henry would edit it together, but he didn't.

Some miles and a milestone

I definitely picked a good time to retire Caturday and Schadenfriday, this last week has been crazy and it's not letting up for a couple more weeks. Setting aside Saturday morning for writing was the correct move. Garrett slept really late yesterday and rather than get bored waiting, I got busy writing. After wrapping up a piece I'd been working on for a while, I submitted it and counted once more to confirm what I thought: it was my 50th Live in Everett piece! Plus I have another three with the Chew Crew.

I'm really happy to have reached this milestone because when I looked back at my author page to confirm that's the correct amount, I saw some of my earlier posts and remembered how hard it used to be to think of stuff to write about and how frustrating it was to write about food by myself all the time. It's cool that Everett's in a small boom now and that I've assembled the Chew Crew so I can get a post on the blog about a restaurant without visiting it a few times.

And working with Melissa and Erika made me realize how smart it is to reach out for help when I need it. LiEv asked me to write about Pride Month after our festival already occurred, so I reached out to people who were there.

So anyway, busy week.

Sunday one week ago was very sunny and I knew I didn't want any part of that, so I picked Big Gulch for my walk. It's on the Western slope of the land mass and is in the woods, so it was a lot cooler than other places I frequent. You can see in the first pictures that I was in the shadow of the hill as I headed down to the trail head via the roads.

Some new cranes arrived in the Port of Everett Monday morning and I wanted to capture them going by Mukilteo in a time lapse, but unfortunately they were half an hour early, so I almost got nothing at all. Managed to snap one photo as I arrived.

I'm always wishing we were at Bluewater for brunch more often, but they don't open until 11:00 and we usually eat earlier. But Garrett slept late enough yesterday that the timing was perfect. We stopped by the plant sale and raffle at the arboretum but nothing there jumped out at as. We wanted to get ice cream at the marine shop around the corner but whoever closed the store the night before left the cooler open and ruined their entire stock! We went to Triangle Produce instead, which was delicious, even though they give you way too much and we couldn't finish it.

Unfortunately since the rainy part of spring, the spot where I was able to walk around the north gate at Langus on Sundays is overgrown. Terrible time for it, since being able to pop over and start a time lapse by the water would be handy. Since I couldn't do that, I left the Brinno by the freeway overpass today. Good view of the sky but I sure wish there was water below it.

While that was happening, I had a nice walk along the retention pond. The mosquitoes were bad toward the end but with my hood up I managed to remain unbitten.

We met up with Bev and Dennis for Father's Day brunch at Bob's Burgers and Brew. They were only serving a brunch buffet and it was a madhouse. The food was pretty good, though. We met at their place after for dominoes and Trouble. Thankfully the AC was on the whole time. The obligatory Bella picture:
