The road down to our complex has a side road to The Cape, a gorgeous hotel.
We didn't want to have dinner at their restaurant, but lunch at the outdoor
lobby bar was perfect. After that, we had drinks at the swim-up bar at our
complex.

We spent most of the day yesterday hanging around the condo watching season
1 of Fargo, leaving just to get food to bring back. We wanted dinner from
the pool grill, but it's closed on Tuesdays. So after two final pool bar
margaritas, we went up the hill to order some food for delivery. They took
forever bringing it, again, but it was delicious.

A bit ago, I stupidly deleted all my photos to make room for a sunrise time
lapse. Not that I took a ton of photos or anything, but it was still a
bummer. I found an app that lets me undelete them, though! So, more
tomorrow. Probably.

Yesterday was mostly a travel day. It'd be hard to describe it as "brutal" because I've flown to India and back, but it was hard. They couldn't seem to get a gate for our plane leaving Mexico, and we left an hour or so late after being shuffled all the way across the terminal. That hour was a big chunk out of our layover in LAX, which had a huge impact because we flew into a terminal with no international arrivals area, so they bussed us across the airport, then we had to walk back across (outside, due to construction) to get to the gate for the Seattle flight. We got there with plenty of time to spare, but we arrived sweaty and exhausted, and much of the plane's functions weren't working while it was on the ground, so we were warm and sweaty, with no bathrooms, until we got to 10,000 feet.

Otherwise, the flights were nice. We flew first class every leg this trip, so I got to watch Bridget Jones' Baby, which I might have taken a while to get around to otherwise, and Nerve, which I really wanted to see. The meals were good, and so was the tequila, though they never seem to bring enough of that.

If you haven't heard, the traffic around Seattle is incredibly bad these days. All it takes is one or two stalled vehicles or fender benders just about anywhere, and suddenly a commute that could be done in 45 minutes becomes three hours. We have no desire to have that traffic impact our travel plans at all, so lately when we have a morning flight, we go down to the airport the day before and spend a night down there. This time we stayed at the Radisson, which was perfect, because it's next door to 13 Coins, where we always like to eat, and close enough to the airport that we were able to just walk instead of taking a shuttle. Pretty great.

We also discovered that now that we both use a CPAP, we can sleep in adjacent rooms without closing the door, so next time we need a hotel for a night, we'll try one room with two beds.

The condo Garrett found for us is in Cabo Bello in a complex called Misiones del Cabo. the way the building is set up is nice, with several staircases going up each building. Ours was at the very top of one of those, all by itself, so it was very private even though there was another one next to us and slightly above. We would have never noticed it if there wasn't a view of their deck from the very edge of ours, even though we had a window on that side; we kept the shade down because that was the sunny side and it was right behind us on the couch. I didn't even notice there was a window there until well into the second day.

The famous arches. You may have seen a closer view of them when logging into Windows.

I forgot to get a picture of all three big fish up on the walls. This one cracked me up because he looked surprised about his broken fin.

Our deck was the perfect place to watch the sun rise. I tried to get a time lapse each morning, but Hyperlapse cut the sun off the right side of one.

I'm not sure if every touristy place in Mexico is the same way, but Cabo is certainly the place to go if you want Viagra, Cialis, and any number of drugs. There's a pharmacy on pretty much every block. I'm pretty sure I even saw steroids listed on one of the signs.

We met my friend David at Cabo Blue, which is his regular hangout. Nice little outdoor bar with good food in a plaza with a sushi/hookah joint, two silver jewelry stores, and some other souvenir shops. The Cabo Blue storefront you see in the photo is their kitchen, salsa bar, and restrooms, everything else is outside.

One thing that gets old in downtown Cabo is being constantly approached for massages, cigars, and tours. The one I liked was this iguana, because I used to have some but never any this tame. David says they sedate them, but I think he's just handled a lot.

1488373659614.IMG_20170226_155605_834

I skipped washing my hair a couple of days and it looked awesome, but on the third day I needed to wash it because it bothered my scalp. I know some people only wash their hair occasionally, and I could probably be one of those people if I got used to it, but it's not worth it because I need it clean when I go to the pool, twice a week.

1488373659567.IMG_20170227_082234_467

Our one fancy meal was a lot of craft cocktails and some amazing snacks at the hotel next door, The Cape. They've got an amazing outdoor lobby bar, which is covered, so you get to watch the ocean without roasting in the sun. Absolutely perfect. The guacamole, salsa, and chips was made with the best avocado I've had in years. We also had ceviche and amazing duck tacos.

That's definitely a place we'll happily visit again. If we ever have the means to buy a second place that gets rented out most of the year, Misiones is definitely a contender.

I don't normally walk on Saturdays as it's my one designated day off from exercise each week. This started back when Fashion Police was on every week and we watched it Saturday morning. Since we had been on vacation all week, Garrett suggested I should take a walk yesterday if I wanted to, and that sounded like a good idea. Since it was Saturday and there were no commuters or commuter trains, I decided to finally take a closer look at the train station. It was a bit surprising to find the elevators were unlocked.

We had lunch at our neighborhood hangout and the new bartender was lots of fun. She's definitely pouring as strongly as everyone else. We stopped by the nearby burger place on the way home for milkshakes, but I never got around to having mine, so there's a frozen root beer shake waiting for me in the freezer. Our new neighbor was working outside when we got home, so Garrett introduced himself. I was feeling a bit too tipsy for that so I kept walking and got the mail. Once we were home, Garrett decided to listen to music upstairs and I watched two of my favorite movies, Heathers and License to Drive.

This morning was a typical lovely morning at Langus. I was a little worried at first because it was gloomy, but it got really beautiful, really fast.

5.36 miles in 1:42, 11,435 steps

I might have gone a little further today, but it started raining, then snowing, and that snow was blowing fast enough to hurt my eyes.

We had lunch with Bev and Dennis today at NYP Bar and Grill. The food there is great, but it was very crowded and loud. It was a relief to leave. We played poker for a couple of hours after that. Here's the obligatory picture of Bella.

Hi Bella

And here's a pin I ordered recently that arrived a couple of days ago. I don't really wear pins, but I figured I should order one now before Zima returns to the shelves and the pins possibly stop getting made. The holes in my ears are pretty big, I suppose I could wear it as an earring.

I have one last day of vacation tomorrow and I really wanted to go hiking somewhere further out, but it's been raining a lot and all those trails will be very muddy. It's really frustrating to spend over an hour in the car only to arrive to poor conditions. So before I head to bed, I'll look around on the map for inspiration. Garrett suggested Edmonds. I might see a movie, and I'll probably go out to lunch.

Nothing really jumped out at me on the map when I looked at Edmonds last night, so I got on the WTA map to look around. Check that map out and you'll see why Washington is such a great place for hiking. I noticed a few icons on Camano Island and decided to give it a shot. I'd only ever been there once, on a pretty bad date back in early 2008. Thankfully I met Garrett ten months later and never had to go on any more stupid first dates. The plan was to check out two state parks, Camano Island State Park and Cama Beach State Park, perhaps even walking from one to the other. But while I was buying my parking pass online, I checked the hours, and supposedly in the winter, they open at 8am. So I started out on the other side of the island, at the Iverson Trail Reserve. I have no idea why the name sometimes includes the word Spit and sometimes doesn't.

20170306_071154_HDR

There's a nice beach there, but it's very hard to get to due to all the driftwood. If you're in one of the very nice houses on the road leading to the parking area, you can just step out your back door, but everyone else has to scramble and climb.

20170306_063528

The trail started out quite nice, though the other beach entrances that were completely flooded with mud gave me a clue as to what I'd be up against soon.

20170306_063828

Interesting red tree. Probably dying.

20170306_064043_HDR

Of course, I found the mud. I'm really surprised I managed to keep my feet dry.

20170306_065650

When you find a trail called Hobbit Trail, you have to walk it.

20170306_065856

I think it's called that because you have to duck under quite a few low trees. Nothing insurmountable.

20170306_070027

I got about halfway to the beach on my way out, but decided I'd save my energy for the next park.

20170306_071448_HDR

Gorgeous driftwood.

Today's first walk, 1.39 miles in 48 minutes, 4,317 steps
1.39 miles in 48 minutes, 4,317 steps

I noticed on my way to the second park that there was no point in walking from it to the third. It's about a mile each way and there's just a walkway next to the road. It'd be one thing if you could walk down along the water or somewhere with a view of it, but adding two miles of road time wouldn't make any sense. I parked the car and soaked up the view.

20170306_074026

The beach there is weird because there's public beach, private beach, and beach which may or may not be public with private stairs coming down. I can't imagine walking down this terrifying staircase.

20170306_074922

The beach is nice and long, though. Lots to see.

20170306_075416
20170306_082719

There was a perfect table to stop and have my breakfast. Onion bagel with jalapeño cream cheese, pot roast, and sharp cheddar. Tasty.

IMG_20170306_082248_612

I went all the way to the end of the beach thinking I'd find a way to get to the trails on the map that look like they're right next to it. Alas, you can't, because they're not. But there was a very nice staircase to climb, so nice that I figured it was public, but it was pretty obvious when I got to the top that I was on a private road, and there was a lot more climbing to do. Thankfully once I got back into the woods, I was able to cool off pretty quickly.

20170306_090121

Today's second walk, 4 miles in 1:38, 9,890 steps, 501ft gain
4 miles in 1:38, 9,890 steps, 501ft gain

After all that, I decided to skip the second park. The parking pass I bought is good for a year in all state parks requiring one, so I can go back whenever I feel like it. But then again, I said that last year after going to Wallace Falls State Park, and never ended up going to another one until today. Oh well.

Since I was leaving earlier than I figured I would, I thought it would be nice to take the long way home, driving down through Warm Beach and Tulalip Bay instead of on the freeway. It was really nice.

This has been a really nice vacation, and I'm glad I took this extra day off. Coming back on a 4-day week will be nice.

One thing I forgot to mention in the post about Saturday's walk was that the day had a theme: people in the street. One couple walked in the road on the way to the beach.

2017-03-06_05-46-10

I took a loop down to Howarth Park so I could see the progress over at the Lion House and found these joggers going the opposite way. I wouldn't have minded so much if they were all on the same side, but it felt weird to go through the middle. Like a field goal.

streetpeeps

Don't worry, that's a screen grab from my dash cam footage. One thing it didn't catch was a cool surprise over at the Lion House. They've got the lions from the driveway! At least, I assume it's the same lions because their paws are all smashed up. The property is nowhere near as big so the lions are slightly out of scale, but they still look nice.

I've mentioned before how much it annoys me that there are burnt-out letters on the hotel signs down at the waterfront and decided yesterday to finally document the sorry state of things. Before I even started that, I noticed that the little fake lighthouse wasn't even on. Strange morning.

I just can't understand why they'd rather leave them in such a state than turn them off. And how much could it cost, really, to fix them? My friend Liz recently bought some huge neon letters hoping to use them at her auto shop, and a couple of them are broken. She said it'd probably only $1,200 or so to fix them. Honestly, if I were that hotel, I'd use the opportunity to rebrand. Soon they won't be the only waterfront hotel so they need to be competitive.

The Boeing glow was strong enough to stay quite visible even as the sun was coming up.

As I got to the scary wooded hill next to the beach up North, I decided it was a good day to explore up there a little bit. A recently saw that My Vietnam, a restaurant run by an older couple, had been sold to Pho So 1, one of my old favorites from Seattle. I tried to go that day but they weren't open yet, but today was cold and wet and perfect for pho, so I went back.

IMG_20170307_121001_629

When she asked how it was, I mentioned that my favorite thing about their other location was that all the tables always had vinegar alongside the normal condiments, so she offered to bring me some. I took her up on that, of course. I prefer to enjoy my pho in stages. To start, I squeeze in the lime and dump in the jalapeños, bean sprouts, and basil. After enjoying it that way for a while, I added the vinegar, and for the last third, I added sri racha. Totally delicious. If you've never had vinegar in pho, I recommend it highly. It's also good in turkey noodle soup.

Speaking of food, it's a Blue Apron week, and I made the honey/tangelo glazed salmon with faro, apple, and crispy rosemary. Good stuff, but the portion was pretty modest. We had some chips afterward.

Went down for my typical Thursday at the tank farm and was surprised after I made my first lap to find a bus sitting at the train station.

20170309_054956

Buses don't leave from there, and even the nearby routes from the ferry terminal aren't KC Metro buses. Even stranger, after I made a loop, a different bus was there.

20170309_060847

That's when I realized I hadn't seen any commuter trains yet and figured there must be something wrong. I looked it up on my phone and sure enough, there was a mudslide. I don't know how often this happens, but it seems like it's at least once a year. It made for a very quiet morning since I only saw two freight trains. Normally there's a commuter train every half hour so I see several.

It got very bright, quite early, so I headed over to the other beach.

20170309_063915

Today was the first time that I remember ever seeing containers arrive by barge. It's a busy facility and I'm there a lot, but probably too early for the most part. I hoped to see some crane action, but there were already several containers there, so there was nowhere to put the new ones coming in. I finally figured out how all that works today. The dock has an empty space for the barge to slip into, then the crane rolls over on rails on either side. It wasn't until today that I could tell how stuff moves off the barge.

20170309_070422

I had a long conference call at 11:00 and then set out for errands and lunch. I had to stop by the post office to pick up an envelope to mail off my passport renewal application, then stop by a photography and frame store to get the photo taken. By that point, I was very hungry, so I drove down to the marina thinking if the special today seemed interesting, I'd eat there for the first time, and if not, I'd go to the grill at the golf course. The sign I'm always taking pictures of at the marina read, "HAM BBO BURGER" which I think was supposed to be "barbecue hamburger" and I wasn't interested, so off to the golf course I went. Want a nice place.

20170309_132238

It was cool to finally find something I like there, because my only other experience with that golf course was a huge disappointment. When we first moved here, I saw it on the map and thought it was a giant park with a complex trail system. Turns out there's a small park and the rest is golf course, and what I thought was trails is just the golf cart paths. Too bad. But now I know there's an awesome place to eat. And they even have booze at reasonable prices. I had a tequila bloody Mary, plus this awesome turkey, bacon, and avocado on a croissant.

20170309_130038

I asked if she liked their potato salad and she said yes, and that it's made there, so I ordered that. She decided to also bring me fries so I could try both. And her pour on my drink was pretty nice. She joked that you can't order a double there.

The best part of the day came when I checked my current batch of lottery tickets and found out I won $1,000! Obviously I'm sad that I only matched five of six numbers, because one more would have gotten me all or part of $2.9 million, but my attitude is that there are much bigger jackpots so I may as well come close on a smaller one. Ha. My winnings will go straight to bills, though I did donate $50 to my old barber's GoFundMe for a new barber chair. Pretty great Thursday.

EDIT: After lunch I went to Lowe's to get plants for the vertical garden because two of the three ferns died, then planted them when I came home. I'll post a picture soon, but didn't want to today because that seemed too optimistic.

I was one number off from the jackpot in Lotto this week. I’ve never been so close to being a millionaire before, that I know of.

I’ve chosen to believe it wasn’t my time, and that if I ever win, it’ll be way more than the current prize, which is $2.9 million, or $1.4 million if you take the cash option.

The prize for five out of six numbers is $1,000 and I just made a nice big credit card payment with that. I’ve been carrying more of a balance than I care to since I started my current tattoo, and this money’s getting me very close to debt free again.

Except for that pesky mortgage.

Walking for me is mainly a solitary activity, but if someone wants to come along, I always say yes. It doesn't happen very often because I go out so early. My friend Melissa asked if she could come along today and we had a great time. I didn't stop for many pictures or videos, though, because I think it's a little rude to be constantly stopping. Afterward, I had just enough time to get ready before we grabbed an Uber to Drag Me to Brunch, the drag queen brunch at Prohibition.

It was our third or fourth time going and the first time we saw it fill up completely. They even brought in another table! Thankfully, some new employees who were there to hang out were roped into helping, otherwise it would have been a huge disaster.

Here's the hostess, Shay Fox. She's fun.

We were quite the large group. Garrett and I shared a table with my nieces and a friend of theirs, and the next table over was one of Garrett's coworkers and her husband. The nieces and their friend drove us back home and stayed a while. Once they were gone, we watched a few episodes from the new season of Girls, which is very different from the previous seasons, plus an episode of The Crown, which is great.

Swimming along

Had another nice Monday morning swim. I really love that our neighborhood has such a great swim center and that I can swim so cheaply. And it's also the cheapest swim available for me. Adults pay $4.25, but I buy a punch card, which is ten for the price of nine, $38.25. Not sure why I never thought to post the video about it that I checked out before going the first time.

That video's five years old and it's funny to see how little has changed, but what I can still spot. The backstroke flags are different colors, and the sandwich boards with the diving board rules show a lot more wear now.

I like the corner which is to the left of the diving boards if you're standing behind one. It's the only corner in the pool that isn't in a lane or by a ladder, so it's the best way for me to stay out of everyone's way. When I got there today, a woman was going back and forth between the ladder and the corner, so I swam closer to the middle of the pool until she left, which was about halfway into my hour.

Here's a song I liked from today's show, Lip Locked 320. It was a guest mix by Brett Gould, and this was the last track he played.

My shoulder was a little sore from sleeping weird so I spent some time in the hot tub, then went to the sauna. If I can get a spot close to the heat element on the upper bench, I can press my back flat up against the wall and it feels nice, but but upper benches next to it were taken up by guys laying down. The closest spot that wasn't super awkward, was across the room, and that wasn't very warm, so I didn't stay long.

I've decided my current swimsuit is my favorite type that I've worn, and that I should stock up now in case they end up discontinued. Turns out they're even cheaper now that I've paid so far! I got two more in black, two more in a pattern I like I haven't gotten yet, and one more in a pattern I've had. I'll post pictures as I use them.

Another reason I stocked up which is probably counter-intuitive is that the leg on my current suit was just a bit loose last week. I put it in the laundry and a trip through the dryer helped, but I'm not sure how much longer this particular suit will last. It sounds dumb to keep buying them, but they last through many swims and I only paid $5 each including shipping for this most recent batch. Compare that to the Speedo brand one I have, which was $25.95 on eBay, but the leg holes are tight enough to dig in. I highly doubt even if I wanted to wear those twice a week that they'd last five times as long, but I don't want to wear them because of the leg holes. So I'm glad I found the kind I'm using now.

Another garment I'm stocking up on is new boxer briefs. I already have tons, but I'm planning on getting rid of most of them, because I no longer like cotton ones. Since I listen to a lot of podcasts, I've heard tons of ads for MeUndies, but knew I'd never buy from them because they charge a lot. But I kept an eye out for more brands selling underwear made of the same fabric, modal, and there are finally lots of them selling for much cheaper. I have pairs from a couple of different brands already that I like, but I'm checking out a few more cheapie ones from AliExpress.

The reason I'm sure now that I want to toss my cotton ones is that we decided that on the first night of our vacation where we spent the night by the airport, we'd wear old underwear, shirts, and socks that we'd throw away so we wouldn't have to pack dirty clothes. After a couple of months in modal, the cotton ones felt awful. There's some weird clothing donation contraption a few blocks from here that looks like it's made from a shipping container. I should do a nice purge soon and go over there.

I wasn't in the mood for the marina this morning, and didn't even have a reason why when I got in the car. But it was raining as I pulled out of the garage, and that's reason enough. It's not a place where you have to worry about flooding like Lowell, but it can get really blustery and miserable. I also knew that I'd have a lot of testing to do today, and that it wouldn't be ready for me to start right away, so I figured I'd stay out longer than normal. Tomorrow will be another long day with meetings at the office and lots of traffic, so I certainly wasn't in a hurry to get back home today.

I went back to Langus, my typical Sunday spot.

It was quite dark when I got there and there was never much of a sunrise due to the clouds, but instead, when the clouds cleared a bit in the other direction, a very bright moon emerged and it was almost like a backwards, mini sunrise. Pretty neat. The sky got more and more dramatic as I walked, and I'll just let the pictures tell the story.

Then it rained, a lot. I got more soaked than I have in a long time, and I was very thankful for how well my eyebrows do their job. I washed my gear when I got home, shoes included. I probably could have kept my feet dry and clean enough, but I wanted to go further North than we did on Sunday and the choices were to walk in the grass or the mud.

Today's awesome walk, 6.98 miles in 2:21, 15,375 steps

I'm excited about tomorrow! I'm going in early to have lunch with my brother, who works at the same campus I used to. I miss that cafeteria. I also have a niece who works there, and she's supposed to join us.

I found two-layer socks years ago and have mostly avoided getting blisters during my walks, and am thankful for that. My feet are still a bit worse for the wear, though. The callouses haven't bothered me until recently, but I got a crack on the side of my foot that just wouldn't heal up. It never hurt while walking, but being barefoot at home wasn't very comfortable.

I decided about a week ago that it wasn't going to heal on its own and I'd have to be proactive, so I started reading up on foot care and it seems pretty simple: use a pumice stone and brush on it after a soak, put on a bunch of moisturizer, put on some socks. I haven't gone so far as to sit with my feet in a bowl, but a long shower seems like plenty, and the pumice I got has a loop of cord and hangs nicely in there.

I don't necessarily shower at home on swim days, though, so I haven't done every day, but it's already helped a lot. I've never liked lotion at all. Lots of people rub it on their dry hands and just love it, whereas when I lotion up a fresh tattoo, I have to wash my hands because the moisture bothers me. Smearing it all over my feet and putting socks on feels extra gross. Nobody likes wet feet in wet socks, so doing it on purpose is strange. But it works.

I also somehow managed to get some sore spots where the tops of my thighs juuuust barely touch. It's funny that I just posted about how I found the perfect swimsuit and decided not to wear it today because I needed a little more coverage. Thankfully I bought a lot of different swimsuits during the auditions and I had something perfect.

They worked perfectly! No pain from those stupid little sensitive spots at all. The only issue was that before I put them on, I tied the drawstring in a knot assuming it'd be just barely long enough and easily lost like on other ones I have. Turns out it's plenty long, and was tied way too loose, so I had to undo the knot. This was after my shower and it was wet, so it was difficult and my hands were sore when I was done. But I had a nice swim with no pain.

Well, no pain from that. I've had a sore shoulder for a few days from sleeping wrong. Oy.

Wednesday Night Fever

Sometimes I wonder if working from home is bad for immunity. I'm rarely in any sort of crowd. Even regular crowded places like grocery stores, I try to hit in the morning when they're empty.

I had to go to campus yesterday for some meetings, so I decided to go early and meet my brother for lunch. My niece was also supposed to join us, but she got pulled into a meeting. My badge wasn't opening any doors, so I strolled around campus doing a little troubleshooting, then met my brother outside the cafeteria. We ate early because he also doesn't like crowds, and after we were done, I went to the security office to fix my badge. Turns out, there's a new policy, and if I go 90 days without entering a building, it stops working and I have to get it activated again. I go rarely enough that I'll probably always have to do that first every time from now on.

The building where the meeting was is huge and looks like a set from a sci-fi movie. I felt like we were in The Island. Our meeting room had odd furniture and audio issues, and was way too warm.

I only mention all of this because I had a weird, long night. I don't know what time it was, but pretty soon after I fell asleep, I woke up freezing. That made no sense, because I stopped sleeping with the windows open now that I have air plants. Turns out, it was a fever. I pulled the blanket up, curled up tight, and baked away in my bed. A little while later, I had a very vivid dream in which I lived somewhere on a river that was right next to a huge volcano that suddenly started erupting. There was never any lava, but tons of smoke billowed out, and large objects started bursting out of the sides. Airplane hulls, boats, train cars, that sort of thing. I had some very near misses with things landing in the river next to me and debris flying everywhere, but managed to make it out unscathed.

It was a pretty miserable night, so I switched my alarm off hoping to sleep in a while. After what felt like forever, I got up and saw it was only 5:22. Not even 90 minutes extra time in bed.

What's weird is that within an hour, I felt mostly normal. The first time I took my temperature, it was 99.6, and a couple of hours after that, it was 97.6. I could really use a nap, but I at least need to get some dishes done. I should also get my air plants bathed, and it'd be nice to clean the CPAP, but I was several days late doing it last time, so I might skip this time and get back on my regular schedule a week from today.

I have things to do tomorrow and better feel great by then, dammit.

EDIT: I just remembered I bought two dozen bagels and a big bag of hoagie rolls this morning, and those all need to be sliced and frozen. Bread party at my house!
