I always think of Six Feet Under when I'm here

You may recognize those tire tracks from my earlier post about assholes who trashed the hill. That picture was taken from up above.

There was a nice treat waiting in the mailbox when I got home. A friend of mine from high school and college wrote this book, which I helped crowdfund.

The views from the parking area across the road from American Legion Memorial Park are pretty neat, and the free telescopes are fun.

Good morning from the free telescope in the park

The rest of the park was a little underwhelming. It looks huge on the map, but it's next to a golf course, and it's not easy to tell on the map where the park ends and the golf course begins. Once you're there, you see the fences and realize the park isn't very big at all. It's also not great for walking because there are no trails, and grass is usually terrible because it's usually wet. At least it was frozen today.

And the playground's cute.

Rawr

I wonder if the flowers were left for the person the bench is dedicated to.

Memorial

Since I'd only done about a mile, I drove down to the waterfront to walk there. It was a bit surprising to see that a lot of the marina was frozen over.

Trapped

The views down by the water were quite nice, but for some reason I only took a picture of this 'pon in the wild. Been a while since I saw one on a walk.

The first few minutes of a walk in this weather are pretty brutal in this cold weather, but then it's ok. As I mentioned yesterday, one thing that's nice when it's cold is that the grassy areas are frozen instead of wet. That includes the handy neighborhood shortcut.

Odd frosty spot

One spot was so frosty, it looked like it snowed. That was strange.

Lately I'll use the shortcut no matter what, as long as I'm using it to get back home. It's not a big deal to get my shoes wet if I'm taking them off a couple minutes later. But it's nice for them not to get wet at all right now.

I think Gina G was here

jedi_iwakura made this hat almost seven years ago! It's been very cold, but of course since I got it out and wore it today, it warmed back up. I control the weather!

I conquered a huge fear this morning by walking up the scary, busy, curvy, steep street with no sidewalk. The only other way to go is to cross the same scary street (which can take a while due to few breaks in traffic) and climb other scary streets that are so narrow they've made them one way, and they also have no sidewalks. That's the trade-off for living in the forest. The main thing that makes that walk scary for me is knowing that cyclists sometimes come flying down on the shoulder of the road. In my mind, I can picture hundreds of different tragic combination accidents. And there's nowhere to get away if you're on foot because there's a steep drop on the other side of the guard rails. At least there are guard rails, right?

Flying high on the sense of accomplishment from finally walking up that way, I decided to achieve another goal I've had for a while, which was to circumnavigate Forest Park. It doesn't seem like a big deal if you look at the map, until you realize there's a huge greenbelt, and the first street that goes all the way across in that direction is about a mile and a half South of our place. Double that and add the width of the park and that's quite a bit further than the 2.5 miles I've been doing most mornings lately. But I did it and didn't really have any issues.

Today's awesome walk, 4.27 miles in 1:19 (357 ft gain)

This dude walked up behind me and loudly mentioned how much warmer it was this morning. Scared the shit out of me.

One of my all-time favorites. It came along at that time in my life when becoming an artist and moving to NYC seemed like the coolest choice possible. It's always fun now to look back on these and see how bleak the city looks and how boring the parties seem.
