Oopsie

So, I was reading "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?" by Mindy Kaling and was really surprised by it. It wasn't funny at all, and the prose was so deep and wonderful. The stories were tragic and moving, but in a way I'm familiar with where everything at the end makes you feel like you've been through the wringer, but come out completely intact and maybe even a better person because of it. She'd been interviewed on Chelsea Lately and Chelsea went on and on about how funny the book was, and I thought, wow, it's obvious she didn't read it, which is unusual since Chelsea loves books and fellow writers.

I was just scrolling through my RSS items and saw a review that said it wasn't "laugh out loud" funny and I was like, damn right it isn't! But then the reviewer started talking about situations that are totally not in the book at all, like working with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

And that's when all the things I thought while reading the book started making more sense. Things like, I had no idea she's Canadian! Does everyone from Canada write like Douglas Coupland? Why are so many of the stories written from a male point of view?

Yeah, turns out I selected the wrong thing on my Kindle and had been reading "Life After God" by Douglas Coupland, thinking it was Mindy Kaling's book, and wondering how the hell she came up with it. So, I'm glad I finally read "Life After God", and now I get to read Mindy Kaling's book again for the first time. (Cue that The Price is Right "bom-bom, bom-bom, wooooooo" sound.)
