What we see in the dark

It's been quite the week. Over the weekend, a service account at work expired because the system notification only went to one person, who didn't read the email. That didn't kill the tool I work on entirely, but it made it so it couldn't talk to two other essential systems. I hoped getting it started back up again would fix everything, but but getting it reconnected was complicated because of updated requirements. It took a lot of people working on the problem for three full days. Some things got improved in the process, but those would have been addressed soon anyway, so that's cold comfort. If I'm using that term correctly.

When lunchtime came around on Monday, I'd done what I could for the day so there wasn't really a reason to hang around. I haven't been to the movies in forever so I thought I'd grab lunch Marysville and see one after. But I did the thing I do once in a while, which is go somewhere for lunch on a Monday without checking to see if they're open Mondays. And they weren't. I wasn't positive I'd find somewhere good to go in time to still catch either of the movies I'd chosen, so I just came back.

I'm planning Banh Meetup 2 and after the taco joint I really wanted to go to was also closed, I went to a favorite hole-in-the-wall joint to try their banh mi. I decided it'll be a contender because I like them with soft bread and theirs was quite soft.

The problem at work's longest day was Tuesday. I sent emails about it from when I got up at 4am until time for bed at 8pm. I think I was here all day.

I had a nice walk at the marina Wednesday, and then we got the problem resolved at about 11am. The only thing left for me was to manually refresh all of the failed jobs. It was a race against time because I had an appointment at 2pm to record the Live in Everett podcast. I've wanted to be a guest forever and they finally asked! I had to wolf down my lunch and my nerves were shredded from work, so I hope I sound ok. I'll share it here when it comes out, of course.

I took one boring picture at the marina Wednesday and zero at Edgewater yesterday. But I did the same thing yesterday that I did Monday and made another plan without checking hours. There's a Mexican juice/smoothie/snack place I've needed to visit for LIEv for a while, and I wanted help, so I made plans with Melissa and Erika to meet up. And Garrett wanted to tag along, too! I figured we should have something small first and I've been wanting to try the pizza at a brewery in the same shopping center for a while now, so the plan was to meet there and share one. What makes the pizza special is that they reuse the grains from the brewing process to make the crust. Neat!

What made my plan bad was that they aren't open for lunch. They open at 2pm. We got in three of our four cars and went over to Basil, the newest Vietnamese restaurant in Everett. It's across from Garrett's office and he'd been once already and loved it. I'd been dying to go, so that worked out. Sort of.

The stuff at the place we (minus Garrett) visited next was much bigger than it seems from their photos. When I write about it, I'll definitely tell people to show up hungry. Cool place, though. I'll share that post when it happens.

Speaking of which! I was finally able to complete one of my first story ideas last month, and almost a month after I submitted it, it finally hit the blog yesterday. I'm really happy with this one: A Mansion on the Move.

20181223_094240

The whole shuffle kerfuffle at lunch made me forget an errand I had, which was to pick up a donated prize for Banh Meetup 2. I feel bad, that's very unlike me. It's a few months off, though, so at least there's no hurry.

That brings us to this morning at Japanese Gulch. When I got out of the car I spotted a light moving on the hill off in the distance. At first I thought it might be a helicopter off in the distance I could see through the trees because it was going so fast, but then it wound its way back and forth down the hill. Someone was running the trails in the pitch black darkness! There's one guy who I think runs up the gulch to work but he stays in the middle where it's easy. And right as I thought about him, he ran by. The new runner hit the level just above the middle as I approached, and I didn't know it at the time, but he followed the interpretive trail down to the bottom. I figured this out when he came back up via the tracks, the cut over to the dog park and went up the opposite side!

He moved crazy fast and it was wild to see. And it inspired me to do the big loop going up to the top and then zig-zagging back down via the residential neighborhoods to the west. I saw a lot of nice views, but the only good photo op was this landscaping near a big weird church.

20190118_062609

When I got back to the park, I noticed a bunch of advertising signs poked into the ground near the entrance and another at a trailhead. Screw that, it's a public park. I pulled them all out of the ground and placed them neatly next to the garbage can they were too big to fit in.

I'm glad I spotted the sign by the trailhead and picked it up because as I walked by the bulletin board to get to it, I saw this amazing new map of Japanese Gulch!

20190118_072339

Here's the PDF. Only one side of the gulch is officially part of the park. Everyone who visits treats both sides the same, but the east side belongs to Boeing and the City of Mukilteo can't really tell people to walk there. It's pretty funny, all the trails are showing as ending when they hit that imaginary line at the bottom. In real life, there's tons more in the white part at the bottom. I suppose since Boeing's railroad tracks bisect the area, they'll never tell people they can walk there. But I'm sure nobody will ever stop anyone from doing it. I'd love to have a nice big print of this map.

My latest tattooing (coloring in the Nagel women's hair black) is healing well but at the place where the parts that were damaged most are healing well and itching. Looking forward to being able to go to the pool again. I think I forgot to mention that I mostly walk back and forth in the pool now. Unless it's really crowded. I won't share a lane.

I didn't realize until today that Monday's a holiday! After this week I'm definitely ready for the three-day weekend.

It's been quite busy but there's a little relief today as my new boss, whose first official day was today, is sick. I have a lot to show her but it won't be right away.

May as well get the bad news out of the way first. There was an apartment fire that claimed one life in an apartment above our favorite place to get brunch, and while there hasn't been an announcement stating as much, I'm quite sure the damage to the building is extensive enough that the whole thing will be torn down.

Obviously the death is the saddest part, but it's a bummer to see so many people put out of work and lose their neighborhood hangout. Hopefully they can move into one of the vacant bars nearby, such as the former Ynot/Forbidden Pub you may have seen on TV. There's an even larger empty bar next to that.

I took the photo of the pub after two lovely walks with Lisa. First, we met up over at Langus, where I can usually be found on Sundays.

20190120_071619

The path to Pigeon Creek Beach is closed on weekdays for the winter so I wanted to pop by there. It'd been a while. Too bad the tide was the highest I'd ever seen it there.

I think the walk along the port to get to that beach is just as fascinating than the beach itself.

There's a nice Instagram dedicated to interesting walls in Everett so I stopped by this one on the way home so I could tag them in a photo.

Monday was a holiday and Lisa met me at Lime Kiln Trail for a quick hike there before her lunch plans.

If our former next-door neighbor is still around, he's close to 100 years old. He lived there alone, and while he had family visit often, I worried a lot about what might happen to him between visits alone in his split-level house. He didn't seem to worry, though. He still drove. He was productive around the house, cleaning his driveway with one hand on a leaf blower and the other on his walker. Not that he needed to; like us, he had a yard crew.

He finally decided to move into assisted living and for the second time in a row, we lucked out with good new next-door neighbors. Alex and Blin are from Colombia and are over-the-moon happy with their house and the neighborhood. Their first baby was born just before our party on August 4th, so they spent much of that day exhausted, hanging around on their deck.

A while back, I asked Alex if he'd like our pellet stove. He brought Blin over so they could see it, and they agreed it'd be great to install in their house. That was back when we were getting the new floors installed, so it's been a while. It's been cold so he messaged me on Sunday while I was out walking to ask if he and their roommate could come get it. They got to work in on that while I carried four bags of pellets that came with our house from our garage to theirs.

I'm relieved to discover that it's a model made to just slide right into an existing fireplace, so we're left with a second fireplace similar to the one downstairs. We don't have a screen for it, though, so I shoved a big cardboard box in it so the cats don't climb in and get dirty. I'd love to someday have a gas insert, but in the meantime we might put a spare TV there and play screensavers or fireplace videos.

It's also a relief to learn that the pellet stove works great. I warned Alex and his roommate before they got to work that I'd never turned it on since we didn't need it. Yesterday he messaged me this photo.

It's so cool to see it in use and I'm very happy with how this all worked out.

Yesterday I decided it's finally time to get serious about core strength as it's really required for what I'd like to do. Mainly, I'd really like to return to the group strength training class at the Y, but I can't stand around long enough to do it. Yesterday I tried one of Adriene Mishler's core strength yoga videos, and even though it was probably a little soon for it, I wanted to try some pool stuff today.

Coincidentally, when I got to the pool this morning, the instructor from that strength training class was the lifeguard. I imagine she was filling in, but in all my visits to the pool since I joined, she's never been the guard before. And then my friend Brittney, through whom I found out about the class, also showed up for her first Wednesday swim in a long time. So, both people in my orbit from that class showed up on the day I started getting serious about training in the pool so I can return to it. Neat! I told the instructor about it on the way to the locker room.

We made a friend on the very cold day we spent hanging around the Brixton Market during our trip to London last year. I was shocked to learn via Facebook that he died today at age 35! I don't know any of his other friends so I've just been looking at the various posts they've been tagging him in to see what I can learn. Poor guy.

New friend Jonny and a magnificent mullet

Jonny was very sweet and made friends easily, and I can tell already that a lot of people have so many wonderful memories with him.

I'm spending the afternoon today at the Korean spa for a much-needed scrub and massage and picking up dinner on the way home from a restaurant I've been dying to try.

Snowed in

It started snowing sometime around lunch yesterday and I don't think it's stopped since. Lots of wind, too. I'm not going outside except maybe to get the occasional photo, and later on I'll put a hummingbird feeder out for a while. Here's the view from my bedroom window at 3am.

20190204_031844

I wish I'd run to the store for some lunch meat and a veggie tray, but otherwise we're pretty good on supplies. Since I'm not going anywhere, it's a good time for some catchemups.

Here's a photo from last night of the progress from Friday's tattoo session. Remember Q-Bert? I've been dying to play again. Especially since we watched a bunch of game play video on YouTube while choosing the color scheme for the pyramid. Jimmy insisted on black for the right side, and I picked blue and green for the left and top. Q-Bert's path down the pyramid is yellow, and I hope the yellow and the green will look more different as it heals.

Tattoo update

It was hard to choose colors since Q-Bert is orange and Coily the snake is purple.

Wednesday was just fantastic. I spent the whole afternoon at the Korean spa and that included the scrub and massage package. I missed most of the incredible sunset as I drove away, but got a good look at the start of it as I got in the car.

20190130_171413

Before driving off, I put in a GrubHub order at 9 Delicacies. The food was amazing, but driving that far with cooked Brussels sprouts in the trunk really stunk up the car. The next morning after swimming, I drove around with all the windows down and left them down in the garage overnight.

Can't wait to go back. I'll be there this Friday with the Chew Crew unless there's snow.

While I haven't been out for a walk or a swim since the 3rd, I managed to get a brand new kind of workout yesterday.

I did half the driveway, plus the steps leading up to the front door. Those were the reason I got to work out there in the first place. We had a delivery the other day and they climbed all the way up in very deep snow. Worrisome.

Unsurprisingly, it started snowing again about half an hour after I was done.

It came up on the Live in Everett podcast that there are nearly 50 parks here, and someone asked me how many I'd been to. I really had no idea so I got out the list. Turns out, quite a few! The green circles are parks I've been to and the orange ones are ones I've been by. Not bad at all.

Things started clearing up late last week, so Friday was my first swim in a while and Sunday was my first walk in exactly two weeks. There's still lots of snow to see, but not in the roads. I'm sure Japanese Gulch was really amazing in the snow, so I figured I'd go and see what was left of it. The steep trails were out of the question, but heading down the center trail and back up was fun. And some parts that would have been too muddy otherwise were covered in enough snow to make them easy to navigate.

The lights at the plant and airport looked neat as I headed out.

With another tattoo appointment coming up on March 1st I decided to get to the pool Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this week and next. I couldn't get out for a walk Tuesday due to my conference call, but did the very intense core strength yoga video.

I'm starting to really enjoy my time in the pool in a whole new way now that I'm there doing core strength stuff. It's different when there's an important goal to work toward in an enjoyable way. I think a lot of it has to do with how challenging it can be to walk slowly along the bottom of the pool, using my whole foot instead of bouncing off the bottom like a gazelle. The music in my earbuds always makes me feel robotic in a way. I always picture various bad guys from the Terminator franchise pushing along as they melt or break up.

My ankles felt a little weak after a couple of weeks off due to snow and only a couple of walks in the meantime, but it didn't take long at the marina on Thursday for them to feel great again. It was so quiet and dark, too. I think I saw maybe two other people the entire time, and one of them was the security officer driving around in the patrol van.

That last photo is of the yacht club. I would have sworn there's been some work recently in that ballroom but photos online pretty much match. Maybe they just don't normally leave the lights on so I haven't gotten a good look. I'm still curious if it's going to be torn down. It's been a while since I took a good look at the plans on the info signs down there, and those plans are of course subject to change.

Searching around just now, I was a little surprised to see one of the companies building luxury apartments down there will be offering units from 750 to 1400 square feet. Neither size sounds very luxurious to me.
