I remembered after I posted yesterday that Garrett took a couple of photos of Nancy wearing the shirt I gave her and me in the alternate, on her phone. I messaged her and she replied in about ten seconds with both!

MeNancy1

That's her mom in the background.

I think a lot about how far things have come with personal electronics and social media. It used to be quite an ordeal to take a photo, wait until you used up the rest of the roll, have it developed, scan it, use something non-intuitive like FTP to get it from your computer to your account, use a command to copy it to a directory, write a web page, revise your original page to have a link, and then sit back and wait while nobody ever saw it.

I don't think a lot of people realize how much of a leap the blog format really was. When you wanted to share stuff before, you had to come up with a directory structure and hope your friends would recognize the differences between visits. Or you could use a stupid *New!* tag.

The only drawback is that everything is presented backwards now, but at least you can scroll back and read them in the right order if you want. We're all used to that, and Facebook and Instagram are really screwing up with their stupid sorting. I can't tell you how many times I've seen pictures on IG that make no sense because someone's telling a story with them but I only see photo 2 of 5 in my timeline. Really dumb. I used to be able to keep up with everyone's Instagram completely, every day. Now, I barely even try, except for on their Stories, which I never miss. Maybe that's the end goal?

Speaking of which, I really enjoy the story format that Snapchat invented. It's a lot of fun to fool around with an ephemeral format. Would I sing a silly song on a video that'll be around until I think to delete it? Probably not! But one that'll be around for a day that a dozen friends will watch, why not?

Tomorrow's the one-week LASIK post-op appointment and hopefully the doctor will clear me for regular activity. Sitting around every morning has been aggravating. Even cleaning up the party stuff outside yesterday had me worrying once I started to get warm.

Friday morning was my one-week LASIK followup, and the results are pretty great. My vision was originally 20/50 in one eye and 20/60 in the other, and they're now 20/20 and 20/25. I was also instructed to discontinue the medicated eye drops and just use moisturizing ones as needed. And I'm allowed to exercise again! I briefly thought about going to the pool for the afternoon session, but school's out now and I wasn't really in the mood to share with the kids. So I relaxed for a few hours while I waited to hear from Garrett.

The fly-in started Friday, which if you haven't read about it here, is a three-day air show he volunteers for each year. He's in charge of the IT. The plan was for me to join him up there for the evening and we'd spend the night at a hotel nearby. But he's been sick, and he accidentally booked a single room. So I was waiting to hear if he was feeling better, and if he managed to get a room with two beds. Yes, and yes! So I got my stuff ready and drove up. Took a while to get up past Marysville, but the last part of the drive wasn't so bad. I haven't been getting many Honey Bucket selfies for their contest this year, but I figured one with a plane in the background would be interesting.

We had a nice dinner from a food truck that was there that I've heard of before, Stick It or Stuff It. Definitely could have ordered the small loaded tater tots.

The sky was really nice during the air show and I really wish I brought the Podo for a time lapse.

I'm not good at sleeping in, and unfortunately was awake just after 4:00 on Saturday. Garrett was nowhere near ready to get up for breakfast and I was too sore from the bed to even think about laying around for a couple of hours, so I got up and came back home. The cats were happy to see me and be fed while the coffee brewed, and as soon as I had a cup, I went down to the tank farm for my first walk in over a week.

IMG_20170708_055622_255

It's shocking how much busier it is down there on the weekend. So many people with boats or scuba gear or fishing poles. I didn't start walking until 6:00, which didn't help. Thankfully I wasn't really determined to stay for long, I just wanted to warm up for today a bit.

Pretty squares.

IMG_20170708_060108_369IMG_20170708_062905_357IMG_20170708_063429_545IMG_20170708_063555_997IMG_20170708_064339_913IMG_20170708_064704_573

I didn't bother taking a screenshot of the map. I only did 2.5 miles or so, one lap across the two beach areas. It's weird to see so many people in the time lapse.

I've been really wanting a mani-pedi for a while, but had to wait because of all the tattooing on my feet. They're healed nicely now, so I stopped by a neighborhood shop to do it. Funnily enough, she accidentally keyed in the price including the last four digits of my card, so the total was over $400,000. That was instantly declined and triggered a fraud notice, which I was able to clear up pretty quickly once I got home. My feet and hands feel so much better now.

Today I was up and out at the normal time and set the Podo up the spot I like by the overpass.

IMG_20170709_045843_443

I parked the car and headed the same way I always do, and was surprised along the way by even more mosquitoes than I saw last time. It was absolutely ridiculous. You know it's bad when you keep having sunrise photos ruined because tons of mosquitoes are in the way. Thankfully I remembered to wear bug spray and only ended up with a few bites. Here's a video to give you an idea what it was like.

During that bug storm I decided I'd take a few weeks off from there and concentrate on the gulf for a while. Since I knew it'd be a while before I came back, I checked out the path they've been clearing for the new salmon habitat from the South end. It was fun, but there's a lot of really loosely-packed dirt and I got filthy. Enough dirt made its way into my shoes that I had to scrub my feet with a brush in the shower to get it to come off. Everything went straight into the wash. Nice skies, though!

6.89 miles in 2:28, 15,751 steps

For a while I was worried there wouldn't be much to see in the time lapse, and you can see it starts out a little slow. After that slow start, though, it ended up being one of the more magical ones I've captured.

It was so nice to head back to the pool for my first swim in almost a month this morning, but I was a bit delayed by the Podo getting there. The first issue was my flexible tripod breaking. First one leg snapped off, then another. I couldn't get it to stay in place with the remaining leg, so I unscrewed the waterproof case and positioned it on the ground. Then there was the connection. Ever since they updated with software recently, it loses the Bluetooth connection to the phone quite easily. Frustrating enough for setting up a time lapse, I can only imagine if I was trying to use it as a photobooth. I left the case pointing upward toward the sky and went on into the swim center.

Speaking of which, check out this awesome sketch of it from the Sketchy Everett feature on Live in Everett. You can click the photo to get to the post page.

Sketchy Everett is drawn by Elizabeth Pearson, who has a lot of great stuff on her Etsy.

I saw a few people I didn't recognize at the pool, including a guy who came in right when I did and then left the pool five minutes after getting in. I've seen a lot of people stay 15 or 20 minutes, but just five must be a new record.

Unfortunately, I don't have a time lapse for you because the Podo was gone when I got back. Some random person could have picked it up and taken it, but it was more likely a parks worker. I say that because all the trash nearby was also gone. So they either kept it, turned it in, or tossed it along with the rest of the garbage. Bummer. I had an appointment with my primary care physician today, so after that I went back to the park to see if the had the Podo in the lost and found at the parks office. They didn't, so they called the maintenance department, who also hadn't heard anything yet. They took my number in case it turns up.

I ordered a replacement Podo and waterproof case today while there's still pre-sale pricing on the camera. Too bad the case is no longer on sale. I've wished I had two Podos, so if the original turns up, I won't be mad.

I highly doubt it would have gone missing if I'd listened to myself right when the tripod broke. I figured it'd be safer over behind the swim center and definitely should have left it somewhere back there.

Woulda been a good'n

I've come to believe that if the Podo had to go missing, yesterday was a pretty decent time for it since the skies have been clear a lot lately. How predictable, then, was this gorgeous sunrise this morning?

Not much to report about the pool today, other than that I had to keep mostly to one spot and very aware of my surroundings because the deep end was pretty crowded. A while back, I realized it's easiest if I just stay in the center since there's almost always 1-2 people doing laps around the outer edge. I prefer the Northwest corner because it's near a window, but feeling in the way every time someone comes around gets annoying. So the center will do. Today, though, two people were going back and forth across the pool on either side of me, oftentimes in a backstroke.

The lanes were really crowded, too. Lots of new swimmers making me glad I don't use that side of the pool.

One thing I noticed on Monday was that a lot of kids were showing up as I was getting ready to leave. I figured it was a scheduled program, and confirmed that on the schedule today. Seems a little odd that they'd schedule a kids' program at 7:30am during the summer, but then again, I haven't looked at what else is on the docket.

My CHECK ENGINE light came on yesterday so I went back to the auto shop today. A part's on the way and it'll be installed Friday, plus they replaced my radiator cap, which will hopefully fix the weird gurgle sound that happens after I've driven for a while. I probably should have addressed that one sooner.

Here are some recent photos of the boys.

It's Thursday, so of course I went straight down to the tank farm. I did it a little differently today, with the Mukilteo Beach side first. It's better that way, because only one trip across the train station area is needed.

Ever go to the same place over and over and notice something that doesn't seem familiar? I can't say for sure I ever saw this rock. But I also wouldn't be shocked to find it on one of my older pictures.

20170713_051734

It's unusual to see a heron calmly hang around when you're close enough for a photo. That happened twice today.

20170713_051916
IMG_20170713_052703_730

Later on, over at the shipping pier, I saw one underneath and tried to get close enough for a photo. It took off before I could, and I finally decided to walk underneath the pier to see the other side. There's not much more beach over there.

20170713_055300

Suddenly people are showing up in boats when I'm down there. One guy was setting up a really small inflatable one, plus cages I assume were for crabbing.

The clouds did some interesting stuff, but only for a few minutes.

20170713_060548

Today's awesome walk, 6.06 miles in 2:10, 13,812 steps
6.06 miles in 2:10, 13,812 steps

During the walk, I realized that my lower back pain has returned to enough of a degree that it's starting to impact me emotionally. I was starting to develop a really bad attitude about some relatively minor stuff, so I'm adding yoga back into the routine. Today I did the Adriene's 20-minute yoga for your back video I like a lot right before lunch, and think I'll try to do it every weekday. She has some other back-centric ones I'll throw in the mix, too.

I thought about going to the department of licensing today to take the vision test and have the restriction removed from my license. I'm getting a haircut tomorrow, though, so it'd be dumb to do it before that. They'll probably take a new photo, so why get one with shaggy hair?

The plan was actually to try to go a couple of extra weeks before the next haircut, just to see how long I could stand to go. I have a meeting on campus next week, though, and would rather look nice.

Right after I hit Post on Thursday, I realized I forgot to add this photo.

Air plant doing great!

That's a plant I gave away over a year ago, as a prize at our July 4th 2016 party. Garrett's ex-boss took it home. She recently sent me the picture to show how it's doing, and I'm amazed! That's a bulbosa, and I've never had one last that long. Of course, I might have if I hadn't sold them. Speaking of which, someone ordered an item with one off my Etsy today, and I only had two which were my own, so that lucky customer's getting one of my favorites.

Friday morning I went down to the river, and as I got started, I got to thinking about the fact that there's really no point in sharing the screenshots of the maps any more. I have six regular places to walk and the routes became repetitive a while ago, so from now on, I'll just stick to the photos and videos unless there's some compelling reason to share. If anyone's interested in keeping up with the routes, feel free to friend me on MapMyRun. I'm about to hit 5,000 miles on there, and I'm surprised it took me this long to finally decide to stop getting the screenshots.

Changes are certainly happening down at the river. There was a big cleanup event down there recently, and the new neighborhood is filling in enough that you can see it from new places.

20170714_050943_HDR

There was a nice bit of fog across the river that would make its way across later on.

I caught up to that fog at the far end of the trail, where the new park will eventually be.

20170714_053540_HDR

There's a huge hill there for now, and it's got some metal poles in it which make a good impromptu spot to hold a phone and make a quick hyperlapse.

Oh yeah, Friday was my birthday! I got a haircut, had my car worked on, and had a nice lunch at one of my favorite restaurants near the auto shop. Then I had a very nice evening at home with Garrett. And he gave me a bubble machine for my birthday! We talked about how nice it would be to have one next time we have an outdoor party, and he managed to have one arrive just in time, a few days later.

Yesterday I was supposed to walk across town to a Fly-in meeting Garrett was driving to, join them for the social part after, then drive us home in Garrett's car. On the way, I was going to find some of the vintage typerwriters downtown and earn of the free pins. Unfortunately, the meeting was canceled due to a medical emergency, so we had another nice evening here.

This morning was a really amazing walk at Japanese Gulch. Best in a while. Almost as soon as I got there, an owl swooped right above my head and took a spot on a branch up the trail a bit. Another joined it, and they kept swooping past me for a while, probably until they decided I was far enough past their nest. I managed to get a couple of really cool videos.

Lately I've been checking out the fringes of the spots I'm familiar with, areas that look kind of off limits, but aren't actually marked as such. Today's spot was the runway lights area, which was cool to see up close. Too bad a plane didn't come in while I was there.

For the first time in ages, I took a couple of streets from the South entrance to get over to the Southwest one that I hadn't been on in a while. Got to see some good junk along the way, and found out that a huge building that was recently completed is a church! It looks like some sort of industrial company, that was a surprise.

I also left via the residential streets, mainly because I missed the fork in the trail I meant to take, and didn't feel like going back the way I came when I finally realized that. I love this mirror on one of those streets that's particularly curvy.

We went out for a very nice breakfast at our neighborhood join. I had the sirloin, rare, and it was perfect. Now we're watching Hidden Figures, which we chose because it was the outdoor movie at the Fly-in last Friday night, but we didn't stay to watch. We just can't stay up late enough for an outdoor movie that starts after 10pm, and we also didn't think to bring anything warm to wear. It's a really great movie and we're not even to the end yet.

Nice swim this morning because the deep end wasn't crowded at all. I don't think there was ever more than two other people in there with me at any point. Afterward in the locker room, I asked a guy I know who's there a lot who flips houses if he happens to know any contractors because we want to remodel our main bathroom. He didn't, but a guy who does that sort of work overheard and introduced himself. He could do most of the work off the books, during nights and weekends, but recommended we call his main employer since we want to work with someone licensed and bonded. So I've added them to the list, but we may not need to call them. I have a referral from a Facebook friend (his brother) coming over a week from tomorrow to have a look, and I got an email from a company some friends of ours have worked with.

Speaking of getting things done, I drove out to Marysville at lunchtime to get my car's emissions tested. There was an interesting-looking restaurant across the street, so I ate there. It was ok.

20170717_123021

I like to hit the thrift stores when I go up there, but today that was just one store, because there was a fire recently at their Value Village. Goodwill seemed pretty crowded, I wonder if it's because there's currently less competition.

It's been a while since I did a hyperlapse from the car, but the sky was nice on the way home, so I set it up as I headed out of town.

I know for sure this is the lowest tide I've seen on that beach, because I made it much further than ever before. Far enough that I could have walked right up to the homes on Naketa Beach, which I'm familiar with from Zillow but had never actually seen until today. Those houses are wild, because there's no access to them by car. They have to park on the other side of the railroad tracks and follow a footpath to the beach.

Early this year when my friend Barbara who passed away in March was getting her affairs in order, she asked me to pick a print from her art collection if I wanted one. I always really liked this one, and it's even more special to me because she said it made her think of herself as a kid. This is Summer Afternoon by Tadashi Nakayama, whose early work often featured his daughter as the model. He moved on to horses as his muses later in life.

Barbara's estate is finally in order and her ex-husband's sister dropped it off yesterday. Please pardon the garage setting. Hopefully we'll find a really nice spot for it upstairs soon.

Another thing that arrived yesterday is my replacement Podo camera and waterproof case!

I can't help but look at the protective film on the case and be reminded of my LASIK. The camera's charging now, and when it's ready, I'll set it up and paint over the lights. Though that's not as necessary these days because it's already so bright when I head out in the morning. No sense in waiting, though.

Something I've had on hand for a while now but just unveiled today is this lovely swimsuit.

My new swimsuit is hella '90s

I love the pattern, it's so '90s. And I already have another one just like it, plus two more of the other colored pattern one I had a while back, and I think even a new black one, all still in the packages. A while back, I noticed that the price of these swimsuits went way down, so I stocked up in case it was a closeout. I think each one was $4 or so, a total steal.

Today's swim was nice. And I'm glad I mentioned it because I forgot to enter it in MapMyRun. Never got around to yoga today, though, because I had a meeting on campus, so was gone for a good chunk of the day.

The triumphant return

Had to stay in due to the timing of a couple of calls today, but I still managed to do yoga and get two nice time lapses!

It was so nice to see a lot of clouds out this morning after a few annoyingly clear and sunny days. I looked around in the back yard for a spot for the Podo, and realized I could get a nice angle if I leaned a broom that's out there against a post. The clouds were low and moving fast, so even though this is processed at the rate I almost always use, it looks really fast.

It'd been a while since I saw Dale, who I met through Barbara, and he took me out for lunch today. We chose Arnie's because it was her favorite restaurant, plus it's easy for him to get to when he crosses over on the ferry. That ferry was delayed, and while I was looking around for spots to leave the Podo, I was surprised to hear my name. Up above me on the deck at a salon was Garrett's cousin Becky, her hair full of foils. She was actually in a chair facing the other direction, and spotted me in the mirror! We chatted for a few minutes and then I put the Podo on the fence, the same spot I've used before.

That one turned out so nice! And we had an excellent time at lunch.

I got a few things done today, including adding a second hook for this plant that's reaching out from beyond the vertical garden. I wanted it higher, but couldn't reach beyond that spot.

There's a spot by the river I found a while ago that's really great for leaving the Podo. There's a barrier made from tree trunks plunged into the shore, and many of them are hollow at the top, forming a little bowl. So while there's nowhere to wrap the tripod arms, that's fine, because I can just set it down. The river's pretty calm there, and the reflections are great. But the skies have always been so clear on the days I've been there, so I haven't gotten the video I wanted.

I took this (flipped) photo right after I got the camera in place. I love when there's just enough light that it's easy to set up.

One cool thing about that spot is that there's often fog on the farmland across the river. It's so cool when it creeps out onto the water.

I walked over to the exit from the boat launch for the first time and the view there was neat.

This view of the neighborhood is always nice.

Sunrises and fog go so well together.

This snail was quite the climber.

One of the new things people are doing all over the place is painting rocks and leaving them for people to find. I grabbed one a while back that had cats painted on it. I see them once in a while and most of them aren't that interesting, but this one's cool. I saw it staring up from the trail. Wonder if anyone else saw it yesterday.

A little Snapchat humor.

And here's the time lapse. I just love the reflections.

Had a nice walk with lisaloopner this morning, but I'm posting about it tomorrow. It'll make sense why when the time comes. The rest of the day was nice.

Today's Bev's birthday, so we went over to celebrate hers and mine together. Steaks from the grill with nice sides, plus two different ice cream cakes. Good stuff.

Hi Bella
Coy Bella

I've always thought it'd be so cool to make a time lapse while we play games, but never remembered to bring the Podo. I finally remembered today! It came out cool. Wish the light was off so there wasn't so much glare on the Trouble board.

lisaloopner joined me at Japanese Gulch yesterday hoping to see the owls I saw a week earlier. They never materialized, but Lisa wasn't surprised by that at all. It's rare to spot owls, and even more so if you're actually looking for them. I was bummed, because I didn't confirm that MapMyRun started, and it hadn't, so the walk wasn't recorded. If it was a walk on roads, it would have been easy to just sign in on the website and draw it, but the trail system doesn't show up on maps, so it's not possible to do that. Instead, I went again today and walked the route again. I only made one wrong turn! And I came down via the tracks instead of the center trail because there was a fallen tree I didn't feel like climbing over two days in a row. Oh and I spent a bit of time wandering around when I started trying to find a new place to leave the Podo. Other than that, I did the same route.

I don't stop for many photos when I have company, so only the first two of these pretty squares are from yesterday.

IMG_20170723_072533_067IMG_20170723_073231_026IMG_20170724_061849_206IMG_20170724_061937_688IMG_20170724_063234_746IMG_20170724_063917_153IMG_20170724_064037_716IMG_20170724_064904_426IMG_20170724_072228_877

The sky remained completely clear for today's time lapse, so I deleted it after processing. Yesterday's was pretty, though.

I also did a 13-hour one from our front stairs on Saturday. Thought I included it earlier, but it turns out I didn't.

Had my teeth deep cleaned today. That was miserable and my gums are pretty sore now. I've always been a once-a-day brusher, and I think it's time to finally commit to twice a day.
