  • 04/27/15--10:42: Steve Stupdate
  • He had to go back to the vet today to get the urine and blood samples done that he wouldn't cooperate for on Saturday. It was really hard to get him into the carrier, but after that, he was very cooperative. What a champ.

Not sure how much of that may be due to these wipes they gave us at the vet that are supposed to help them relax. I'll definitely use them from now on for sure.

And apparently one of the neighborhood cats would like me to grill something up for her.

  • 04/29/15--14:38: Accomplishment
  • I've just filled in the final missing cell in my Love It or List It/LIOLI2/Property Brothers spreadsheet, which means I’ve seen every episode of all three. The final confirmed episode that was missing was LIOLI season 1, episode 7, which I purchased on Amazon Instant Video. I'm pretty sure I've seen it, but that would have been before I started keeping track. Nobody involved made this easy for me. Dish Network has most of the episode numbers wrong. LocateTV doesn't have original air dates. TV Guide writes their own descriptions, omitting the owners' names. Amazon has people's names wrong. HGTV repeats certain episodes a lot while never showing others, and even has some of the LIOLI2 episode information listed under LIOLI. But I did it.

  • 04/30/15--06:43: Poor kitties :(
  • We had to take the food and water bowls away at bedtime last night because Sam and Steve are having their teeth cleaned today. Watching Steve alternate between following me around--which is his super polite way of asking for food--and reaching under the buffet trying to fish out any old kibble that may have ended up under there is really a bummer. Strangely, Sam has left me alone all morning. He's usually the one who starts asking for his dinner at around 5am.

  • 05/03/15--13:44: New color next to the house
  • Our cherry tree's blossoms have all been blown off by the wind, but luckily we have some stuff that's more resilient.

New color next to the house

It's always a joy when you're outside watering or doing yardwork and the cats are in the window shooting smug looks. Assholes.

  • 05/04/15--06:59: My poor plant
  • It has awesome orange, yellow, and white flowers, but the petals keep getting blown off, just like with our cherry tree.

    Poor plant

The yard's looking great, though. I tried to mow on Friday and could only get about 2/3 of the way through. I've only mowed a few times and couldn't figure out why it kept stalling out. Garrett adjusted the wheels or whatever and made it look fantastic yesterday.

Bonus attempt of a shot at the view across our neighbor's yard. That's the view the cats get when they hang out on the upstairs tower.

  • 05/05/15--08:45: Answer for question 4352.
  • One of my first interviews after college was for some sort of sales assistant job at a local radio group. A guy I knew from school was a producer there, and it was a referral. I had a really nice interview with the woman who was hiring. She talked about the importance of brands in our lives and even mentioned what I was wearing and how often we hear or see that particular brand mentioned in the course of the day. She was lovely.

Then her boss came in to take over. If I had a transcript of how it went, people would think I made it up. He was just that much of an asshole. SO pissed that I didn't wear a tie. He went on and on, and it was completely ridiculous.

I don't have many regrets in life, but one of the few I did have was that I didn't just end the interview when it became obvious to me that I'd never want to work for that piece of shit. But of course I was young, and worried that living in a small market meant being anything but polite could make trouble for me later.

  • 05/07/15--04:30: Happy birthday Garrett!
  • How appropriate that I just woke up from a dream that he was a major star in. We were at home (a completely different, but also very cool house) and I was having a look at the permit he'd obtained to hang out at a certain area to film some sort of airplane test. I heard some noises outside and went to investigate.

This particular house had a huge ravine behind it that had tons of small trees and bushes in it. Off in the distance I could see something black moving around. At first I thought it was a wild boar, but then I was pretty sure it was a bear. I ran back inside, hoping to just go to bed and never see any more wildlife.

Back inside, I heard Garrett say, "Come here, Sonya!" which I thought was weird. He started bringing some big boxes out, which I thought were for recycling, but he reached into one and brought out two bear cubs. They were so cute and cuddly, but I said he had to get rid of them immediately. If their mom didn't kill us, they'd certainly do it themselves once they were big enough.

I spent the rest of the dream walking around the house checking it out, and was glad when I woke up. The cubs were still there the whole time and I just wanted them gone.

  • 05/07/15--04:59: New life for an old thing
  • For some reason lately I keep thinking about the stuff that I've owned the longest that I use all the time. I've had the same wallet chain and keyring since college. One of the things I've had the longest is my Braun hand blender, which is the first immersion blender to hit the market that I know of.

I'm pretty sure I've had it for 25 years now. The way I figure that is that there was one in Total Recall, and that came out in 1990. It's worked great ever since then, and I think the main reason it's so sturdy is that there are no removable parts. It's just built well.

I've been aware for a while now that you can put wine in a blender to rapidly age it and improve the taste, and the results of a taste test on the show Hack My Life convinced me to finally try it. I figured if I liked the results, I'd probably want to do it pretty often, so I brought the Braun downstairs, along with a big Slurpee cup to blend it in. It really does work quite well! Franzia burgundy's our house wine, and blending it for a few seconds makes it taste like something that costs at least 5x more.

15-year-old me scored a handy little appliance!

  • 05/08/15--10:17: 30 YAYs of Yoga
  • This morning I finished Adriene Mishler's 30 Days of Yoga series. Not in 30 days or anything. When I started, I was doing yoga three days a week and going swimming two, but I soon realized that my days are a lot better if I do yoga in the morning. Most weeks lately, I'll do yoga all five weekday mornings and still go swimming once or twice.

The yoga started off as something I was trying to do instead of physical therapy exercises for my lower back so I could get back into the long walks I've enjoyed for the last couple of years. What I'd like is for this summer to be yoga most days with several walks each week, because school will be out soon and the pool's a lot less fun when it's crowded with kids.

I did a walk earlier this week and it was definitely painful still. Stopping to sit for a few minutes at the park helped. My shins have been unusually sore in the days since then, and something occurred to me. I got a different pair of shoes than what I'm used to a while back, and they're definitely not as comfortable for me. I've been wearing one style all the time for years, and probably shouldn't have switched. The next time I go for a walk, I'll use the old ones and see how it is. I've got a pair in the garage that I use when I work in the yard, the pair that I'm currently wearing daily, and a new pair waiting in storage. I'm actually on hold trying to find more pairs to stock up on.

Edit: Bah! I called four stores and they're all out of my size. Not a surprise since they're on clearance. They go on sale pretty often, though. I've never paid full price for them.
