I would have taken a photo, but it wouldn't have been super pretty. Chicken mole, rice, black beans, guacamole, chips for the guacamole, and tortillas for the mole. It was good.

The mole and rice is an awesome frozen bowl that I've been unable to find in the store since we got really into them. I happened to notice two in the freezer clearance section, so they may have been the last two ever. Hopefully I'll find them somewhere else.

The continuing adventures in waking up

I already wake up a several times during the night, and on nights when a lot's on my mind, it's extremely hard to get back to sleep. Due to a family emergency I won't be getting into right now, when I got up for a bathroom break at 12:30 or 1am or so, I just couldn't get back to sleep.

I gave up at 1:30 and watched an episode and a half of Buffy, which is finally getting really good. I probably could have slept several more hours after that, but Sam moved around too much. After a while of snuggling with Sam behind me and Steve in front of me between the blanket and sheet, I checked the time and saw that it was 3:33. I normally get up at 4:10 and can either catch the 5:23 or 5:53 bus depending on the length of my walk, so I decided to get up and go, taking the longer walk, but still being able to catch that first bus.

It was nice, except that I arrived at the bus stop at 5am sharp. Normally I've only got about 10 or 12 minutes to kill waiting for the bus, but today I had twice as much, and I'm pretty sure that this was the coldest morning this winter.

I survived, but I'm exhausted, and I've got a pretty long day ahead. But it's a good thing. An old coworker saw on FB that I want a cheap treadmill, and he has one to get rid of. It just so happens that he has to go home to West Seattle to get his wife before returning to my neighborhood for a dance lesson, so he's just going to pick me up so I can check out the treadmill, then drive me all the way back. So that's nice.

Yikes

Two drug-related things I'm surprised I haven't seen mention of:

Wasn't Dennis Rodman probably also high on meth as well as drunk during that weird press conference in North Korea? It's totally the drug of choice there.

News of Philip Seymour Hoffman's overdose broke the same day as the Red Heroin Chili Peppers played the Super Bowl halftime show. The accomplishments of former addicts aren't really celebrated at the same volume at which we mourn those who are destroyed.

I refuse to buy cocktail sauce and tartar sauce. Pre-made tartar sauce is weird, it's hard to get through a whole jar of cocktail sauce, and both are really easy to make. I just always keep horseradish around. Cocktail sauce made of ketchup and horseradish is great, and my tartar sauce is out of this world. Sorry I don't measure anything like this, but here are the ingredients:

mayo
lemon juice
dill relish*
chopped capers
horseradish
garlic salt or salt and pepper
dill

Dill relish is another thing that's not necessary to keep around. I don't like sweet pickles even though I like sweet relish, so I prefer to chop up a dill pickle if I need dill relish, and keep a jar of sweet relish around.

Speaking of pickles, pickle juice is amazing. It's great as a marinade or to chase shots with. I don't even like whisky, but I'll drink it with a pickleback.

Never buy anyone a coffee cup as a gift unless it's a very awesome coffee cup. Nobody needs any more coffee cups.

Don't be a party pooper if you aren't interested in the sporting event or the awards show. Volunteer to cook since the people who are interested will want to watch. They'll love you and you'll love impressing them with your offerings.

EDITED TO ADD:

The thing that made me think to post this in the first place. Those little jars of gravy are awesome. Sometimes you just want a couple of tablespoons of gravy!

Asparagus Adventure

One of the most frustrating things is wanting to buy specific produce and finding at the store that it's not in season and is really expensive. Even more frustrating is noticing after you've already rung it up. It really is better to look for what's cheap and work backward, unless you've got money flying out of your ass.

I find myself skipping asparagus a lot because it's expensive, but I was at the store the other day and it was only $1.99/lb, and they even had these awesome 2lb bags. I grabbed a bag, washed the whole thing, snapped off the woody ends (saving them for later), and roasted all of it on two sheet trays. Half of it was for dinner that night, and I saved half for later.

Over the weekend, I threw the woody ends in a crock pot in a box of vegetable stock for about four hours, blended them up in the food processor, then squeezed all the water and juice out of the mush using a strainer. Then I added some cream, spices, and turkey meatballs and mini penne that I needed to use up. Basically just cleaning up the fridge and cabinet by making soup. It was fine, but not spectacular.

Yesterday I started a batch of risotto, eventually adding half a cooked onion, the rest of the asparagus, some parmesan, and a little vinegar. I'm so glad I found a recipe for risotto that mentioned vinegar, it really makes it. I served that with some of my signature chicken, which is frozen tenderloins that I thaw in the microwave, season with salt and pepper, and cook up in a pan using olive oil. It comes out great every time.

I kinda feel like buying four more pounds of asparagus, roasting it, and freezing it all in small batches for later.
