Podcast Appreciation Month: Monsters of Talk

What's there to say about Margaret Cho? I'm almost positive you've formed an opinion about her. It's crazy to realize that it's been 19 years since I used to come home from 12-hour graveyard shifts and catch some soap operas on tape along with All-American Girl while eating some cereal before passing out for a couple of hours and then heading to school. Finding out later through her standup about how she was actually treated during that time was heartbreaking and really changed the way I looked at Hollywood.

All these years, she's been one of my favorite voices. I love her perspective and her big heart, though I will say that getting to hear her so much every week has uncovered one aspect of her personality I don't care for. I've seen it a lot in people I've known. It's a, "How have you moved past this? Why aren't you more mad about this? Shouldn't you be angry right now?" kind of thing. Check out the Hannah Gadsby episode to see what I'm talking about.

Whether or not there are any guests, and even if one of them's bugging me a bit, I still really love listening to Margaret and her co-host and good friend Jim Short. I've always wanted there to be more Margaret Cho stuff to watch and listen to, so I'm glad she got into podcasting. I suppose I should finally check out Drop Dead Diva.

Podcast Appreciation Month: My Brother, My Brother and Me

I'm not sure how they found me, but MBMBaM tweeted at me one day to let me know that if I liked podcasts, I should give theirs a shot. I'm glad they did that! Justin, Travis, and Griffin McElroy dispense extremely unhelpful answers to questions people send in as well as questions found on Yahoo! Answers. As the announcer says in the disclaimer at the beginning, they are not experts, and their advice should never be followed.

Bad advice makes for great podcasting. These guys are hilarious enough that for many weeks, I was listening to each podcast a second time the next day. It's also the only established podcast I ever started listening to and decided I had to go all the way back through the archive.

They were even nice enough to isolate a bit that I loved for me and post it when I asked. You should also search "mbmbam sampler" if you'd like to check the show out without jumping into a full episode.

Podcast Appreciation Month: Nerdist

You've probably heard of Nerdist if you've heard of any podcasts at all. Chris Hardwick has built a pretty huge empire which includes hundreds of Nerdist podcast episodes, 29 other podcasts on the network, a huge YouTube channel, and several monthly live standup shows in Los Angeles. Basically way more than anyone can reasonably keep up with.

I don't even try. I just listen to the main podcast, which releases three episodes a week, and don't listen to the ones featuring guests I'm not interested in. Chris and his cohosts Jonah Ray and Matt Mira are all comics and are great at unstructured interviews with all kinds of celebrities, and are still fun to listen to in the "hostful" (no interview) episodes.

The recent episode featuring Tig Notaro is a great first one to listen to if you never have.

Podcast Appreciation Month: RH Reality Check

I wish there was no need for this podcast. The deceitful, dirty tactics employed by antichoice politicians need to be exposed, though, so I'm glad Amanda Marcotte and RH Reality Check are on the case. Each week's an infuriating roundup of issues affecting women's reproductive and sexual health, and Marcotte deserves some sort of award for her perseverance.

I love when a classic gets a good remix.

Podcast Appreciation Month: Savage Lovecast

Our culture's really weird about sex. Almost everyone wants to have it and we all know it's healthy and normal, but we're all supposed to pretend it's dirty and weird. People can really benefit from listening to some sexual health and wellness talk every week, so while I wish people didn't need Dan Savage, I'm glad he's there.

I also like his new approach to monetization. The podcast (351 episodes so far!) has always been free, but he recently added the option to subscribe to an extended version each week. I listen to enough podcasts that I don't feel the need to subscribe, but it's a great option for those who are really into the show.

And, yep! I'm aware that he's polarizing. You probably already either love him or hate him, and that's cool.

Podcast Appreciation Month: Secretly Timid

Back before podcasting was a thing, I used to have brilliant conversations with my friend Ana at happy hours at Gameworks of all places. We used to say, damn, someone should have been recording that! And now I listen to Secretly Timid and think it's pretty great that this cool group of friends has a structured time every week to get together, catch up, and talk about issues. And you can participate! Leave them a voicemail or send in an email, and it's pretty likely you'll hear it on the show.

The current group (Jon, Nan, Danielle, and Brian) is great to listen to because they get along even if they don't always agree. That's usually true for all groups of friends, but most of us don't spend a lot of time talking about the news of the day any more. Even if we do, it's never for the benefit of listeners who aren't even there.

In addition to the hot topics and a featured song at the end of the show, they also devote some time to shows like The Walking Dead, Mad Men, and Project Runway, and are considerate enough to usually set a timer so you know how far ahead to skip if you don't watch those shows or are worried about spoilers. I'll confess, I go ahead and listen even if I haven't seen the episode because I've gotten bad about paying enough attention to the shows I'm watching lately.

Also! Nan is currently raising money for the Seniors Pets Assistance Network, which helps low-income seniors in Dallas County keep their pets by helping with food and veterinary care. Please consider sponsoring Nan's team in the Pins for Pets bowl-a-thon. I did!
