Podcast Appreciation Month: In Bed with Joan

I heard Joan Rivers on Nerdist ages ago and it was pretty obvious during the interview that she should have a podcast. I didn't realize at the time that the camera crew from Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best was there, but I shouldn't have been surprised that she was interested in doing a show, that it would become a plot arc on JKB, and that it wouldn't be a simple affair.

I wasn't really sure if I should include a post about In Bed with Joan in this series. It's a video show, it's got pretty high production values, and it's not the simple, raw affair that makes podcasts so great. But Joan Rivers is a goddess and we should all enjoy everything she does while she's still around. And it's a great show. Joan's the perfect host, and she's able to get pretty great guests. Kato Kaelin changed his mind at the last minute, and that's all you really need to know.

Remember that guy you knew in college that had the insanely huge record collection and a late-night alternative show? Jeff Anderson is that guy. Join him for an awesome hour every week of great music you've always loved along with classics you've forgotten and cool stuff you've never heard before.

His is the only PodOmatic show I've listened to. It's pretty neat how the track that's playing is displayed with the cover art in the window so you don't have to match it up to a tracklist later on.

Podcast Appreciation Month: Josh and Ross

You might be familiar with Josh Wolf and Ross Mathews from Chelsea Lately, or maybe just Ross from his time as an intern on the Tonight Show. I've read both their books and recommend them highly.

The podcast is the only one I listen to that's recorded live with people calling in, with the option to watch video. I never do that because podcasts for me are just something to listen to during work. And one very valid criticism of the show is that about half the time they're taking calls, nothing goes right.

It's also best when they're both in the studio. That hasn't been happening as much lately because of their book tours, but hopefully with all of that winding down, they'll both be there most of the time. Last night was their one-year anniversary show, and it was great to hear their favorite moments from the first year.

I would probably listen to Dave White and Alonso Duralde talk about just about anything on their podcast. They've been together for years and have a wonderful, hilarious rapport. Luckily, they're both movie critics, so they've got a perfect subject for a weekly podcast that I find fun to listen to, even when none of the movies are ones I'd ever see.

It's really wonderful that they take the time to do this each week, because they also both review pretty much all of the major releases each week elsewhere online. That's a lot of work and time each week, and there are so many bad movies out there.
